R8 RWS What is it? Help me out here.
Discussion
As I long time Porsche GT buyer and track day user I now find myself persona non gratis at my "friendly" Porsche dealer, to quote:
" No we will not accept a deposit on a new GT3 from you as you do not buy enough other Porsches off us to put you on our list."
I have read the press blurb on the R8 RWS and i am thinking this could be an alternative. I have chatted to my dealer who after initially denying such a thing even existed, finally got his finger out and would appear to be able to sort me a car. I need to fire over a spec.
However after an hour of so on the truly awful Audi configurator I am a bit confused as to what Audi are trying to achieve with this car. There is very little info on there and most of the options are fluffy bits of trim rather than anything useful. The car seems to be quite cheap, especially compared to the Standard V10. I was hoping for a Porsche GT3/GT4esque model, fairly stripped out, track focus, concentrate on driving fast and hard rather than posing around, cup tyres, better brakes, track data software, etc etc.
Looks like I was wrong, unless I am missing something it would appear to be just a cheaper way into R8 ownership, rather than a differently focused model. If that is the case why limit the numbers?
Confused
anyone got any better info? Ta

Cleverly / cynically designed to target poorer folk who have not bought enough Porkers from the other part of the VAG group.

I read the write up and that is what piqued my interest. However it's proving difficult to flesh out the bones of what it actually is. For starters it's a fair lump cheaper than the write up suggests at £110K, that is £15K cheaper than a std V10. How much haggling room is there on R8's? There are no photographs or specific details on the configurator, i.e. The (gastly) stripes. Even the standard spec details have it down as fwd
that would be fun. Looks a bit of a half cocked effort all round.

Am I the only one astounded by this display of knobberism by the Porsche dealer?" No we will not accept a deposit on a new GT3 from you as you do not buy enough other Porsches off us to put you on our list."
Yes. They are being tossers at Porsche, but thats a product of Porsche maintaining the brand image with the GT products by limiting production.
Just looked at gen 2 991 turbo, new GTS and Targa 4s. All left me a little underwhelmed, so got a V10 plus R8. What an event. Early days but much more sense of occasion and very precise drive, so up there with the GT3 for driving experience.
Don't get the R8 rwd at all. If looking for a purer car, why not do it with a manual as well?
Personally, I would (and did) get a 1 year old V10 plus for the same money as a RWD new.

I have a GT3 deposit with dealer, but no idea if I'll get one! Drove the AMG but wasn't 100% convinced, (though it is great, feels much bigger to me and I think depreciation will be savage). So I ordered an R8 RWS. The engine is superb and I bet if it sells out quickly they'll be a plus version in future, but like you say the options are not focused around driving (so much as quilting the seats etc). Either way, great chance to own a fantastic engine/chassis, even if not as raw as GT3...
