What is a fun, reliable, unique yet affordable car for a university student?

I'm looking for a car to have fun in when I'm young and I'd love a unique car that I can be proud of a.k.a. not just another car on the road.

My budget is ~£5,000 but it's not set in stone. I'm only 20 so insurance is still a major factor but I can always get quotes myself I just need the cars to do them on. I'd love some type of hot hatch or coupe. The classic Minis really have my eye but the reliability and maintenance puts me off a bit since I'd be at school 9 months out of the year without tools or my mechanically inclined brother. Having said that I am still open to classics.

I'll preempt some recommendations like a Ford Fiesta, I've looked at them and they are basically one of the best options but being the best selling car in the UK it's not very unique and not much of a conversation piece which is why a classic Mini is calling to me.

Any help would be great, thanks!

Z4 3.0i, early models well under your budget and a few simple changes to the bushes (and ditching runflats) improve the handling a lot.

No idea on insure though admittedly.

MX5
MR2
Ford Puma and 4k change
Clio 172/182/197
Corolla T-Sport
Celica
Subaru Impreza
Focus ST (albeit a leggy one for this money)

Pretty much any early-mid 2000s hot hatch or coupe really!
