Hey everyone,

So ive signed up for a banger challenge to Gambia and am researching vehicles that will get me there for under £500.

Dull & slow, but cheap, reliable & relatively easy to fix

Saab 9000 is a great car, but you won't get a decent one for £500.

Nissan Micra
Nissan Almera
Toyota Corolla
Toyota Avensis

These seem to be popular in the Gambia, so you should be able to get parts to repair in the area and in countries on the way.

They should also be easy to sell on once you get there (if that is the aim)

Plymouth-Banjul, Plymouth-Dakar as was? We took a late 80s Saab 900 on the 2003/4 run, given to us for free because it'd been written off. Back then, the rules were £100 to buy, £15 to prep - and entry was a fiver. We cheated, and diverted about half of the purchase budget to a new rad...

Is Mauritania safe again? (It'll still be an utter hole, I'm sure)
What's the restrictions on LHD for selling in Gambia, and age for Senegalese passage?

Take whatever car you want to take - the dafter the better. If you're trying to figure out what's a sensible, practical choice of vehicle to take, then you're doing the wrong kind of event entirely.

one of my favourite little cars is the fiesta zetec s mk5, plenty of these around the £500 mark and they are a good steer, in my experience very reliable and a great laugh for the money. my current one has 4 decent matching tyres, no rust, good history and cost me bang on £500

not sure how comfortable it'd be on such a long journey. my saab 9-5 wasnt much more than £500 and felt like it could cover a journey like yours with ease and without breaking your spine.
