A4 question for Dr G
Discussion
Ive ordered a new A4 and I didnt specify any kit apart from the comfort and sound pack. Looking at the pdf Audi sent me it says I have
E21 Launch Model
QK1 Camera for driver assistance, required for Pre Sense City
8T6 Cruise Control system with free wheeling capability
Its a manual so the free wheeling wont work and I've not requested any front face camera. Ive currently got a call outstanding with Audi to explain to me but do you have any idea what these are or should I take them with a pinch of salt!?
I have the rear face camera as part of the comfort and sound pack.....
Thanks

If it's like the skoda, the "camera" is tucked into the rear-view mirror housing. It's used for lane-assist, high-beam assist, sign-recognition, and possibly a few other things. Don't know which of those are standard on an A4.
(Obviously I could be talking out of my backside and it's something completely different!)

Hi
Sort of. The Front Face camera is part of the pre sense city pack. This is now standard on all models which scans the road in front and pre-empts and prepares the car to stop or slow down. It will also stop the car fully if the driver has not made any attempt to do so and will help prevent accidents at slow speeds.
However I dont understand how this will work in a manual. If the car wants to stop fully or slow down surely the clutch will need to be used at some point?
I think it actually jolts the car with the brakes and encourages the driver to take further action.....

The same camera is used to keep the car at a certain pre set distance behind the car in front, so you can take your feet off all pedals and let the car free wheel and the camera will be used to keep the car at that set distance. It will speed up or slow down as the car in front moves. You can also take your hands off the wheel and it will keep itself in the lane, you just have to move the wheel slightly every now and then to let it known you've not fallen asleep. This lane feature is part of the other automation packs.
However, I have a manual so no idea how this will work to be honest. If the car needs to slow down and change down some gears, Ill need to be involved to put the clutch down..... so why they include it in a manual I have no idea. Time will tell when I get the car to try it!!

My Wife's Qashqai has 'Autonomous Emergency Braking' although we've never tested it. It is a manual and I understand that if required it will (attempt to) stop before a collision but will neither change gear nor disengage the clutch so you'd just end up stopped and stalled. You'd think they'd fit some kind of clutch release system, apart from anything else it will surely be harder to stop if the momentum of the engine is still turning the wheels?
Sorry, totally missed this thread.
Tigger1 beat me to it anyway; anything with any sort of presense gets a weird camera related option code. Most common one simply says "multi function camera".
In all honesty I've never had braking guard trigger on me in a manual so couldn't tell you exactly how it would react in an emergency stop.
