this will probably sound stupid, but do others 'get a feeling' about a situation.

earlier today i was about to cross at a zebra crossing, at the edge of the pavement and just a van coming at least twice the distance of the zigzags away.

i just had a feeling about it and didn't start to cross, said van went sailing through the crossing, didn't slow at all, passenger looking at paperwork and driver looking for something out the side window.

considering the driver had to swerve slightly for a traffic island, i'm glad i got the feeling and didn't just walk onto the crossing.

is it just a driver thing, in that you get a feeling about a driver, or have others had it elsewhere?

just wondering.

It's just your subconscious using experience to raise your level of concern. Van drivers often drive aggressively. You have observed this over your life. This one looked a little quick perhaps, so you took the decision not to cross.

I was at a 'function', looking at the 7 raffle tickets I had in my hand whilst the draw for the prizes was getting underway. I looked at one ticket in particular, number 196. I said to myself - "196 will win the first prize".

The third and second prizes were drawn, then the last prize. The guy called the number - "196". Yes, three minutes or so after I said to myself that this particular ticket would be drawn, it was.

Fekin weird.

ste prize though.

My daily commute is a 50 mile round trip across rural Dorset/Wiltshire, mainly B roads. The roads are fairly open sighted, but there are a few wooded areas which deer obviously live in. At least twice in the last three years I have been making good progress, when all of a sudden I think I should back off a bit in case anything was to run out in front of me. Shortly followed by deer/multiple deer running across the road ahead of me.

Another case, about 15 years ago now. Dropped a mate off and was driving home late at night. Towards the edge of the village normally I'd have been going pretty quickly (being a young lad at the time), but for some reason I held back and stuck to 30. Next thing I know a 4x4 comes flying round the bend on the wrong side of the road and wipes us both out (not quite head on, but close). Other than shock and a minor scratch I'm fine, but I'm convinced if I'd been going my usual speed I wouldn't have walked away.

The sceptic in me does not usually believe in anything like this (I'm very cynical about anything 'supernatural'), but admit I sometimes wonder if it was more than just coincidence.

I am convinced that there exist as yet undefined forces that act upon our cognitive function. Some examples that I have experienced:

When I was 17, I experienced a very weird pain like it was someone else's pain. Later that day I found out that my best friend had died; from an aneurism in his left chest, where I felt the pain earlier.

In the 90s I was convinced that Johnny Herbert would win the British Grand Prix. There was absolutely nothing to suggest he would ...but he did. And the week before the weekend when Senna died, I was overcome with the very clear belief that something awful was going to happen at the race.

I often think of a song in my head then turn the radio on only for that song to be playing.

All very weird!

Woke up bolt upright in the middle of the night last year (on the day of the brexit vote as it happens) in a cold sweat and panic

A good friend and small business partner had been missing for 3weeks at this point and I was in the holiday inn express at bham airport going to the belfry later that day.

I got a call at 11:00 that morning to tell me he had jumped off a bridge and commuted suicide through the night (jumped into mud flats from 120m up and was sucked into the the mud. the body was never recovered but was seen on CCTV and by passing traffic as he leapt)

I do think my subconscious was connected in some ethereal way

6th sense or intuition?

I can sometimes predict something but it is often because I subconsciously weigh up the odds.

I once told a family member that the lunch they were being invited to was where they would be sacked. I could see the way their industry was going, see changes in their company, knew they were past retirement age and knew they were paid over the odds.

No mystery there.

I can very often tell my wife's mood, whether shes had a good day at work or not without even speaking to her. Not sure if I'd call that a 6th sense. If you live in close proximity to someone for years you pick up various "vibes" quite often tiny clues, a look, a seconds delay in a response to a question, their driving manner, the way they stir their coffee or whatever. There must be hundreds of little clues we pick up and process without even knowing it.

Sometimes we get it wrong. We misinterpret the clues or test them against the wrong references or experiences put 2 + 2 together and get 5.

The majority of 6th sense experience we have is variations on the above.

That however doesnt account for the winning ticket scenario. Is there such a thing as luck? I think there is but luck is something that can be influenced to a certain extent. You might get lucky and be given £1m tomorrow. It is unliklely, but if you buy a lottery ticket you make the chance of it happening more likely than if you hadn't bought a ticket.

How did the OP know his ticket would win? Maybe it was just chance, a good guess? If you guess enough times are you bound to be right at some point?

But what about feeling the pain of another like the poster above? It happens. My Dad was a very rational chap but on the night i was born by emergency C-section before my due date he woke in the night with an excruciating pain in his abdomen that suddenly went away.

Maybe there was a rational explanation? My mum was in hospital already, so he was probably tense and worried. Maybe he'd eaten a dodgy pork pie earlier?

I do think we humans have a lot of stuff going on with our senses that we don't know or don't understand. Like we've been domesticated over the years. A bit like a pet dog who can be docile but then suddenly protective of their "pack" snarling and barking when they hear a noise outside.

Is that 6th sense something similar? A little bit of our DNA when we relied on instinct to protect us from the Sabre-tooth Tiger or the rival tribe in the next valley?
