Cassette swap now needs a spacer

Got a 9 speed shimano cassette that I have just replaced like for like. Done this many times in the past Odd thing is after the first ride and dubious gear selection I noticed the cassette had appeared to come loose. Closer inspection though it was tight, the 11T on solid but the rest loose.

To get it working I broke apart an old 10 speed cassette and used one of the plastic spacers from between the bigger cogs behind the cassette. Seems ok but I am puzzled as to why I have had to do this when I never have in the past. Cassette was brand new in the box.

Unfortunately I had already binned the old cassette to be able to compare them. got one on another bike so I might remove and compare them side by side over the weekend.

Anyone had something similar?

Seems odd.

The only vaguely similar thing that has happened to me turned out to be a loose freehub body on my MTB.

I solved that by bothering my 'arris to look up the torque setting for tightening the freehub to the wheel, and getting the torque wrench out. But then I'd changed the freehub over at the same time as a cassette change. Maybe worth checking the freehub by "giving it a wiggle" with the cassette off?

Freehub body is ok. You could actually slide the cassette back and forth on the freehub body.

Someone might be more knowledgeable about which spacers go with which speed cassette but I suspect there’s always been a spacer behind the cassette and it got stuck to the old one and therefore not re-added to the new one when you replaced it.

I guess that is possible, I don't recall it every having one and it's had probably 5 or 6 cassettes since I got the wheels. Annoyed I dumped the old cassette straight away I don't normally.

There are two types of shimano freehub, regarding speeds;

9 & 10 speed is effectively a shorter spline, and 11 speed is longer.
you can fit 9/10 speed to an 11 with a spacer, but not the 11 speed to the 9/10.
depending on what came with your wheels / cassette, you may have a thick spacer (2mm I think) and a thin spacer (0.9mm?)
if you fit a 9/10 speed to an 11 hub, you need both. For a 9/10 speed on the 9/10 freehub you still need the thin one.
