I've after some advice on clothing from the more enlightened, I seem to be okay for Summer/Winter gear, although struggle through for the rest of the year. In the more autumnal mornings for the first 5 miles I use an old version of this, then tend to be too hot for next 10 miles -http://www.pedalon.co.uk/acatalog/endura_fs260_roubaix_jacket_red.html#aENxx2057

What's the best set-up for mixed conditions?

Would this solve having separate gilet/arm warmers/jacket, or would individual items be more useful?

Leg warmers - is it worthwhile seeking waterproof and bib's, or is warm and maybe wet more important?

Thanks

I go for layers and stick with arm and leg warmers until it's definitely cold enough to justify long sleeves and tights. I also carry either a gilet or an equally light shower/wind proof in case I've misjudged the temperature or the pace of a group ride ends up being slightly less than I need to keep warm.

Overshoes, a buff and something to put on your head add flexibility; and I use long-fingered MTB gloves as a halfway house between my summer mitts and full-fat winter gloves.

I'd suggest that the Castelli jacket is unnecessarily expensive, a standard thickness jersey plus a gilet or jacket will do the same job with greater flexibility and for less cost.

As mentioned, good quality leg and arm warmers are essential and I'd add a pair of toe covers too for when over shoes aren't necessary. Also a thinnish pair of gloves - I really like Defeet ones - and a cap for under your helmet when it's chilly or raining.

I like the assos skinfoil base layers

This early winter one in particular gets a lot of use as it gets cooler

Work out where you feel the cold and layer up there, some people go from summer gear straight to winter gear!!

I dont really feel the cold, so on cold autum days I wear one layer of winter kit, on warm days I wear summer kit!

Arm warmers and knee warms are good, sometimes the days might be mild but there could be a cold wind that a thin layer of fabric helps take the edge of

I like a gilet as well, thin shower resistant gillets are handy for this time of year to add a layer to summer gear

I also like roubaix/winter shorts, shorts with some insulation in, work well with knee warmers on colder days

My knee joints hate the cold so I wear knee warmers when the temp goes under 10 degrees and then 2 layers of knee and leg warmers when the temp gets under 5 degrees

Lots of layers, and like the guys above I tend to keep my knees covered up as well using 3/4 length shorts.

I have a really nice Endura windproof with zip off sleeves that is one of my favourites, I often zip the arms off halfway through a ride when I'm starting to warm up as they scrunch up and go in the back pocket, and I can unzip them without taking the jacket off.

I have just bought some arm warmers as this autumn seems quite warm. I have a pair of leg warmers too and after 20km or so tend to remove them.

In sub zero temps, I use a thermal top and a pair of the missus 80D tights as well as the warmers. Layers are the way to go so you can adjust the warmth level.
