The bike I'm looking at getting is, shall we say, worth a little more than my current two.

Contents insurance coming up for renewal in Dec and my current (excellent) cover covers a bike up to £1000. The one I'm getting is 5 times that.

What they're quoting is eye watering seeing as it's always either indoors or i'm riding it. Doesn't get left anywhere out of eyesight,

Any suggestions?

I do both contents and house insurance via Pedalcover - IIRC the bikes are covered upto £9k.

There are some fringe benefits too, e.g race insurace included if that's your thing.... :-)

Try Pedalcover.
Their prices are very good for buildings and contents cover including bikes up to about £12k.

Not had a claim with them yet so can't comment on that side of it.

Pedalcover - covers my 3 bikes (one is worth 10k) - and the contents (its rented so no need for buildings) was about £350, covers you for races and triathlons and stuff too.

Ah ok.

Hadn't thought about a specialist to do both. Thank you.

Mine are on a Barclays home insurance policy, but none are hugely expensive. I didn't bother for years.

Can you just cover them as a valuable item at home (in the same way as a painting or item of jewellery)? That is, covered for theft from home, fire, etc - but not anything else. The prices most seem to quote for bikes seem to assume you'll be keeping it in a flimsy shed or leaving it locked up all day in town.

Another vote for Bikmo here.

It's nice and easy to arrange a policy with them that suits your requirements and they're very transparent in confirming what they do and what they don't cover.

Is that good, bad, or indifferent for the cover on offer?

Is the cover offered the cover that you want?

Obviously the premium is going to change depending upon cover for the h & c....etc

My renewal was £350 for house and contents with Pedalcover and that included an excess waiver policy which can be used on both house and motor insurance.

That 420 was just for the bike

For a £5k bike, I'd say that's not unreasonable.

How does it compare?

Insurance these days is a complex area and specialist stuff - which an expensive bike / kit is - makes like for like comparisons more difficult when comparing specialist policies with add-ons to more general policies

Check the quotes you are looking at carefully

The worst thing is finding out that the cover you thought you would have under the policy isn't there

But some of the specialist policies might be pricing for cover that you simply don't need / want to pay for

Taking the bikmo £420, that is a fair chunk of change. But if you smashed your bike up and destroyed your shorts / jersey / helmet in a crash in a sportive, it looks as though you would get paid out in full. Do the cheaper alternatives offer that too? Do you even want that cover?

A sportive? Shudder............. This is a MTB and the £5k is a conservative value

Yes, the thought of a sportive can do that to people! But the point carries: if you wreck your MTB by crashing it into & destroying a dry stone wall, some of the specialist policies will pay out for the bike, your gear and for the wall to be rebuilt after you have been sued by the wall owner. Some of the extensions to a domestic policy won't.

It always pays to shop around for services such as insurance, but it also pays to make sure you know what you are buying and that you are buying what you want and need.
