So I’ve messed up a bit...

Long story short I don’t have my v5, a tax reminder letter and I don’t live at the house which is the address on the v5 and so getting a replacement sent won’t really help.

Do I just need to set fire to the car and buy another one quickly or is there another solution?

Ring DVLA and explain your situation. You’ll also be able to change the address at the same time.

Not a big issue. Download and fill in a V62 duplicate V5C application and take that to the Post Office along with your RFL fee and an extra £25 for the V62

This, no problem at all, did this yesterday myself.

They probably will not do it over the phone, because that would open the door to possible fraudulent scammers?

You cannot change the address on the V5 by phone. You must post back the V5 to DVLA by mail.

Slighty different situation so would appreciate advice.

I'm in the process of buying a car via the son of a 90 year old gent.

His (90y/o gent's) wife was the registered keeper but passed away several months ago.

Probate is settled and he (90 y/o gent) is the sole beneficiary of the estate so he has title to the car and is happy to sell.

He or son cannot locate the V5 and has moved house to live with son.

DVLA say he must apply to change reg'd keeper and address which will take circa 6 weeks.

If I by the car from him can I apply for RFL and V5 with change of reg'd keeper at a Post Office.

If so, presumably I need to insure the car before RFL will be issued and I'll need to own it before I insure it and then wait for the insurance to appear on the MID database.

Advice appreciated.

Buying s/h cars privately ain't simple anymore is it?

Buying a second hand car is super easy now that you can make a bank transfer in minutes and change the registered keeper online in minutes.

You can tax a car before insuring it. The website just checks MoT. Also you can own it before you are the registered keeper.

Thanks BV but do you need the V5C (or the number from it) to change registered keeper?

If you don't have that you have to do it on paper and it is slow, but in the run of the mill case it's fast and easy.

Thanks BV.

As mentioned above, if you fill in a v62 you can tax it straight away at the post office (as long as it is mot'd).

This, as explained earlier.

That hasn't been necessary for several years.

What's "owning" got to do with whose name's on the V5C?

Thanks for all the help so far and sorry for appearing a bit dim.
The vendor's Son has text me this morning. He has contacted the DVLA again and they have an error on previous address so have agreed to send a replacement FOC to the correct old address within 10 days.
Elderly gentleman has mail forwarding in place so should have the v5 in 7 to 10 days.
Son has advised by text that he has taxed the car for 6 months. I can only assume he doesn't know it's not transferrable. Might help me though as I'd like to collect the car this weekend.
So, it's taxed =✓ MOT till march=✓ if I put it on an insurance policy it's then road legal.
The bit I can't get my head around is, am I better off leaving it taxed in previous owners name until I get home as DVLA will not allow me to tax it online without the V5.
To ensure its road legal do I need to leave it there until the V5 issue is sorted?

You’re massively overthinking this. Just wait til he V5 arrives then sort it all into your name.

Technically your biggest issue is insuring the car as it won’t be in your name but it’s pretty much irrelevant, unless you’re a tinfoil hat wearing wibblist who’s petrified of Big Brother and the instant Judge Dredd style justice that is always meted out to everyone always unless you’re a traveller.

Just wait until he checks the perp's unpaid parking ticket. We are talking twenty in the Iso-Cubes, minimum.

Meanwhile ....
