Every time I fly I idly look out of the window and imagine whether I was on my old motorbike I would be able to beat\keep up with a plane on take off from 0-150 knots (assuming average take off speed).

So how fast does a plane take off if using full throttle and would I beat it hehe

Drag racing, basically, except with a longer track - A 737 does 0-130mph in a mile, roughly.

Quick, sure, but not that FAST. And that's with a relatively slow start - but it just keeps on accelerating. Can't imagine it'd be hard to thrape it in the quarter mile, even with something fairly prosaic.

OP, your motorbike has a speedo that reads in knots? Rare, and given the preponderance of speed cameras these days, bold...

You seem to know the answer already.
Not really as I have never done 170mph on my bike officer, and as I understand it most aircraft don't use full throttle to conserve fuel.

In terms of acceleration, the bike will start very fast but then slow down, whilst the aeroplane will start more slowly but increase. Where the two lines cross, that's where you lose :-)

Isn't it 180mph for most, or V1 as the pilots say?

Is it not the speed of the air over the wing as opposed to the actual speed of the aircraft.

V1 is the Stop/Go decision speed. If you lose an engine below V1 then (as long as the take off calculations have been done correctly) you will stop within the ASDA (Accelerate Stop Distance Available). In layman's terms you will stop before the end of the runway.

If you lose an engine above V1 then you will be able to get airborne.

Simplistically V1 is dependent upon field length, headwind factor and pressure altitude (since this affects engine performance).

Vr is the speed at which the a/c is rotated into the take off attitude. Again, simplistically, this is a factor of aircraft weight.

Isn't it more that you don't have a choice, as you won't be able to stop in the space available?

Youyou may well nott be able to stop in the space available, but Sheduled Performance A regulations are such that, as long as the take off calculations have been carried out correctly, if you lose a donk above V1 you will get airborne and you will make V2 by the Screen Height of 35ft (or 50ft old regs).

Not only that, but you will climb to engine out stabilising height and can then proceed to Destination, make an Instrument Approach, overshoot and divert to nominated Diversion airfield, carry out an Instrument Approach, overshoot and carry out a Visual Approach.

You didn't mention that when you originally started on about losing an engine. Besides that, 'sheduled' has got a 'c' in it.

When I read G15's explanation, and when placed in the context of the OP's question, I immediately understood that G15 was referring to a multi engined aircraft. I'm not that bright and I'm not a pilot.

I can only assume that anyone else would think the same unless they were less bright than me, i.e thick!

So, for someone to comment on the post being not specific enough mean they are either thick or being an awkward door handle.

Not normally one for internet "White Nighting", but when someone who has an education and experience in such things spends the time to make an explanation only to be poked at for not making it a simple enough and containing a typo, I just think the thread would be better off without such a response.

Most modern planes takeoff and land by computer, but a big plane with a big load will takeoff and land around 150-200mph. It needs a hypercar or hyperbike to beat it.
