Due to the photobucket fiasco of photos disapperaring, I have decided to restart the thread for this build which is my attempt to swap an S85 B50 engine, SMG3 gearbox, M5 diff into an E92 chassis using E9x M3 front and rear axles and other BMW components.

Whilst I am not the first to attempt this swap (Hartge, Manhart etc...) I am not aware of any RHD E92 V10's.

Back in January I acquired this 2008 E92 320i that was to be used for a few months whilst I researched what needed to done before ripping apart and fitting the S85 engine.

I kept this E92 for all of a month as there were a number of things that were not quite right.

Despite this, I continued to collect parts for the project and managed to get hold of an engine block fairly cheaply followed by both cylinder heads and stock M5/M6 exhaust manifolds.

Fast forward to October 17 and I have just acquired a bodyshell from a 2009 non-running car that was stripped for parts.

The plan this weekend is to swap out the front axle with the M3 version and mock up the engine in the car once the SMG 3 gearbox arrives.

Updates to follow...

Some more photos copied from the previous build thread. These show the modifications to the engine sump in order to fit the engine on the E92 M3 front subframe.

As mentioned in the earlier post, I purchased some stock manifolds to help understand how much space I have to play with in relation to the E92 M3 steering column.

Obviously I need to position things in the engine bay as the engine is still sitting on the floor in these photos but located roughly where it needs to be on the subframe.

Clearance between the column and manifold is minimal but hopefully enough.

Small update. The project is back on although there has been a little bit of scope creep. I still have the 320i shell but was offered a E92 M3 that had been used as donor for a E90 WTCC racer. The car was fairly stripped when I collected a few weeks ago but a good basis for this project. I’ve since re wired with a body harness from another M3 DCT which I’ll have to modify for the SMG.

Thanks

After spending a lot of time reviewing wiring diagrams over the last few months so that I could approach the electrical phase of this build, I ended up importing a complete E63 M6 body harness from the US.

As I need to integrate the wiring for the SMG 3 transmission and M6 fuel pump system into the M3 harness I decided that this would be the easier option. Also there are a number of other things not on the M3 wiring harness that the S85 DME needs to see.

A rather large box appeared last week and the fun of picking the M6 harness apart commenced. Now that I have the majority of circuits separated I have finally started wiring into the M3 harness.

Hopefully I will have the car fully wired in the next few days and then the engine mock up can begin.

Question: is that as insanely complicated as it looks?

Having access to wiring diagrams is the key and understanding how the power distribution works from the fuse box on an E9x M3 helps in terms of integration.

It’s a lot of effort but hopefully worth it.

That's going to be an epic build. This is not a criticism but is there enough of a difference between a E60 and E92 to make all the effort worthwhile? Size and weights can't be that far off.

Manual would have been easier but I wanted to use the SMG.
