For those who have been circumcised...

Hi Guys,

So I had a circumcision last Friday, and now recovering. Did try less invasive treatments such as creams (not recommended as I could not get my foreskin to retract enough to get the creams inside). Did think of a prepuceplasty but it was not recommended due to the severity of my phimosis and the idea of paraphimosis scares me anyway.

Anyway, I have a few questions about the recovery:

1) I notice that where the stitches are, there is a bit of bleeding where one stitch would be. Is this something to worry about? Other than that, there's no bleeding.

2) My entire penis is swollen, not just the wound or glans. Is this expected? In other words, I can't sit on the toilet and have my pecker facing down too. Does this swelling naturally go down? I am not taking medicines due to the constipation risk (I had haemerroids a few days prior to surgery). I am on healthy foods though, no processed foods, no meats, not dairy, etc. The inner foreskin is slightly swollen in one part too. The foreskin being swollen I understand, but should my entire penis be swollen?


3) I am still too sensitive to wear any underwear. How soon could you wear underwear? I will try vaseline though. But I can have showers, although a bit sensitive but not too bad.

4) My inner foreskin seems to be crumpled together but I can see that it can stretch, probably for when erect. Is this the case - that the true extent of inner foreskin left is only known when erect?

I had a similar experience a few years ago,

I ended up off work for 3/4 weeks I think while I recovered.

1) I had bleeding for the first week,

2) The whole area was swollen for myself,

3) I think I was around 2 weeks, but I was on Co-codomal for a chunk of time.

It's not an experience I would want to repeat, good luck and hope you heal well!

I saw a few consultants and they all said 5 days recovery. Ahhh!

I have a trip in mid November I hope I can make now...

The bleeding is very minor, not profuse, but it is where the pain comes from. Not severe enough for pain killers though.

Any other opinions most welcome.

It's possible I got an infection while in the hospital, if you are concerned I'd head back to your Dr. Was all fun for me that my Dr was an old school friends Mum.

Problem is, I can't go out of the house due to the sensitivity. With my constipation over the weekend (see other thread), I called 111 and my GP's surgery and they all said come in for an appointment - ermmmmm.

1) I got quite a lot of bleeding initially with mine. Monster wood the first morning after didn't help (plus side: thinking OMG look at size of that!). Nor did the irritation / stimulation from the nerves and skin repairing. Bleeding stopped after 5 days or so. Random pain from stitches did last 28 days and beyond. Still get occasional twinges from the site of some stitches but nothing really worrying.

2) Similar to me. Not a huge amount of swelling but enough to be uncomfortable, again it went after 5 days or so. Aspirin / ibuprofen / paracetamol not an option at all? Its usually cocodamol and stronger ones that clog me up. Having said that, I only took 2 ibuprofen, didn't need any more (and I'm generally a pain wuss). Maybe all that is related to:

3) They told me to wear loose boxers after the operation. Utter sadists. Worst. Advice. Ever. Immobilise the wound (bandage, snug underwear) and stop the damn thing moving around and opening the huge scar in your best mate. Possibly the first time I had worn a jockstrap since cricket practise in school. Don't worry about bathing anything for a week or so (unless there is an obvious infection and the Dr will then advise).

4) No idea. That will have to be wait and see I'm afraid.

5) It was for me, restored my self confidence and did wonders for my sex life. Love having an American porno spec fella.

I would phone the surgery and request a home visit. I know they are reluctant these days, but if you really are immobile (and it sounds that way to me) then they have a duty.

For me, the worst thing about getting 'cut' as an adult was underwear rubbing on my bellend. Made it properly sore and carried on for a couple of months till the skin 'toughened up'

I too had bleeding around one of the stitches, so a nurse at my doctors surgery removed it at the request of my GP. fk me did that hurt!

How did you deal with the rubbing issue? This is what is most problematic.

How did you find sex once the skin "toughened up"? As this is the keratinization process, which numbs the nerves.

Moisturising cream and time, i couldn't find any way to deal with it unfortunately

Definitely less sensative there now, and frankly i prefered how sex felt beforehand but needs must. Oh and you'll definitely last longer (being married, i get told to hurry up!)

I was circumcised when I was 23 - TWICE!

NHS @ Royal Bournemouth Hospital, the sugical registrar made a REAL mess of it. Looked like I'd been cut by a witch doctor with blunt scissors. Properly messy! He only removed half the foreskin, I had stitches that came untied, so bleeding was often, and worrying for a few days. Nocturnal stiffies were exructiatingly painful as the skin was scarred and stitched around my knob.

When it healed I was circumcised properly and privately, covered on BUPA, at a private hospital in Bournemouth. The GU surgeon who consulted me suggested I could sue the NHS for making such a mess of my op. I just wanted it to be fixed so I could "get back in the saddle again", as it were.

BUPA: I had zero issues with the stitches or healing.

The sensitvity on your knob will reduce over time, maybe only takes a couple of weeks, but I'm going back about 25 years now.

Sex: absolutely no difference! MUCH cleaner, anyway!

Wear tight fitting underwear not boxer shorts and you get used to it, once it starts to heal wear whatever you wish.

Take something like ibuprofen and paracetamol, these should not constipate you but get some senokot just in case.

I had a vasectomy and circ the same day, and I was back to work after a week off.

Had mine done two years ago now. This is what I found:

1) There will be a bit of bleeding to begin with. But this will subside after a few days. Unless it's pouring out you shouldn't worry.

2) Mine was swollen for about the best part of a week after I had it done. It'll go down.

3) I was told by my surgeon to wrap it up for two weeks until it healed. It was a special type of gause and tape, and I would wrap it twice a day to prevent infection.

4) Not entirely sure what you mean here.

I was off for about 2 weeks and I went back to work (desk job). But I was still changing the bandage for 3 weeks. In terms of underwear I wore nothing for the two weeks except for a pair of baggy jogging bottoms. That made it easier to deal with.

Thanks for the answers. This is my first time with stitches so not very familiar with them. My only concern is one stitch seems to stick out and is a bit sharp. It seems to go right into the scar line. This causes the greatest discomfort when asleep etc. Underwear is really a no-no until the stitches dissolve I guess, vaseline or not (that won't help with protruding stitches).

RE foreskin crumbled up, that will be answered when things will heal (the final cosmetic result).

The problem with tight fitting underwear is that they immediately put pressure on the glans, constantly. I am looking to try something loose though.

Thanks. The swelling worries me, I didn't expect the whole thing to be swollen. I can understand why though. It makes trying any underwear on even worse.

I've left mine unwrapped to dry out.

You shouldn't do that, it should be wrapped up but the bandages changed frequently. It prevents infection. If you're leaving it unwrapped it's going to be open to the air and increase the risk of infection.

Also, wash your hands before you go for a pee. Every time.

Ah ok thanks. No sign of infection but I have dressings so I may just do that.

Swelling is normal, it’s a very invasive operation on one of the most sensitive parts of the body, it took 3/4 days for it to reduce a fair bit

A bit of blood came out of mine too but nothing serious,

It will be sensitive but I managed to leave the house after 3 days or so with loose cotton boxers on with loose jogging bottoms and just walked very slowly.

The skin will soon start to toughen up, and sex isn’t as sensitive but you still have a lot of sensative just below the head and shaft so it’s not all bad.

I found irrigating the stitches/wound area with sterile saline and gently washing with a lint free dressing helped enormously in terms of keeping everything clean and healthy.
