Must be warm enough to keep me WARM, and I hate being cold. Also must be suitable to wear over a suit, to cope with early winter mornings on train platforms, and subsequent walking/underground at destination. Don't want single breast full length traditional style. Budget a couple of hundred I guess, rules out the frankly superb looking specialist stuff.

Would also like a warm hat!

Is it warm though? One of the reasons I'm steering away from that style is the seemingly lack of insulation. There must be a reason "proper" cold coats don't look like this? Would I be happy and snug on Grantham station platform 1 at 6:30am on a Monday morning when it's 5 below and blowing a gale? Well, not "happy" but you get the idea.

I picked up one of these last winter and it's epic.
Perfect for standing around in deep winter watching my son play football on a cold Sunday morning.

They have a factory shop too. Always bargains instore. Just get there before the ferries arrive from across the North Sea every day. Day trippers buy in bulk to take back over. My last Beaufort was £90.

I bought a tweed shooting jacket, mine was a cheap one from eBay, very warm and wind proof. Does depends on what 'image' you want to have, pockets full of dog biscuits, shotgun shells (not me), dog poo bags (empty) optional.

As for a hat for warmth something with flaps over the ears.

Agreed, OP wanted to spend couple of hundred, my canada goose cost me over £700. He also wanted a warm coat for the UK. Have you ever worn one? I was sweating in mine in Iceland! In November!!

I also have a Hugo Boss woolen coat and it is perfect for UK winters as long as it isnt raining, i dont think it would hold up to well if constantly getting wet as an only coat.

I could stretch a bit but to quote a certain non vegan loaf "I can't do that" (the Canada Goose)

I have yet to feel "perfect" in anything UK targeted as either my legs freeze or me torso does, or it's too bloody expensive. I should just be cold and stop moaning.

I bought one of these a couple of years ago:

Barbour Sapper Jacket

Fits well over a suit, warm and - more importantly- waterproof due to the sylkoyl waxed outer. Looks good as a smart coat and can be worn with a pair of jeans. It's all the winter coat you'll need in the UK.

Thing with Buffalos is you should really not wear much underneath them.

We're issued them and the Montane Extreme smocks, it takes a brave person to wear nothing underneath but if you do they are simply amazing. I semi bottle it and wear a compression t-shirt.

Not sure on wearing it over a suit, but I have a Carhartt Siberian Parker and it’s the best insulating coat I’ve ever owned. Sure they do more formal stuff.

So the superb looking specialist stuff costs more than a couple of hundred?

FML

I thought a good Harris Tweed and a wax jacket would suffice for less than £100!
