What child seats fit comfortably in a 991? Can you fit them in the front and turn off the airbag? At what age do they no longer need a child seat in the back? Very tight back there.

135cm or 12 years old. Although when they say child seat that also includes booster type seats rather then conventional car seat most people imagine.

When I had my 991 coupe I had my older boys in the back on booster seats and my younger boy in the front in a recaro junior seat fastened by the seatbelt. No need to disable airbags for front facing seats, only for rear facing seats (normally 12 months or less).

I think you can buy Junior seats from Porsche that will fit in the back seats if you’re not keen on booster seats, many standard junior seats won’t fit in the back as too wide.

I'm pretty sure Porsche sell a child seat and can guide you on this. It may be on there web site.

Noooo - that's not right! At least not now it isn't - airbag must be disabled for any child restraint system to be used in the front passenger seat - just checked my good to know app to make sure.

Ok, after feeling like a terrible parent I checked:

http://www.childcarseats.org.uk/choosing-using/air...

Looks like the answer is:

Do not put a forward-facing child seat in the front, unless there is no other choice. If you must do so, make sure the car seat is as far back as possible, the child seat is securely fitted and the child is securely held by the seat belt or child seat harness, keeping the child as far as possible from the dashboard. Ask the vehicle manufacturer how far the airbag comes out as it deploys and whether it is safe to use a child seat.

Hope that helps.

Don't know about the 991 but in the 997 you can only turn off the front airbag if ISOFIX has been specced. It is possible to get airbag deactivation retrofitted at an OPC but I think it's £500 or more.

I wouldn't feel bad - nobody got hurt. Blimey, when i was young seatbelts were never used (and rarely fitted).

The legal side states that you should follow the guidelines from the child seat manufacturer AND the vehicle manufacturer, and Porsche say the airbag must be deactivated - it must still be dangerous to children even with the seat fully back.

And to follow a post by Cheib - Porsche don't fit front passenger seat airbag switches as standard to any of their sports cars, and when they are fitted you have to also have Isofix fitted to the front passenger seat, this can be optioned from new or retro-fitted.
