I’ve not done badly with eBay over the years. My biggest risk was a watch which turned out genuine. Today I was not so lucky......

Paid $183 for a new in box Nest. Delivered today were 3 Ecobee3 Lites. It would have been great last week when I bought my first Nest for upstairs. I’d be OK with Ecobees instead and I would have saved a fortune. However, not so great now.

Ordered a laptop bag (cheap), it was a messenger type i.e. with a flap that folded over the top, got a normal type no flap just a zip all the way round. Under normal circumstances I'd have been onto the seller for a replacement but I'd bought the bag as we were about to go away and I wanted something to protect the laptop so wouldn't have got the replacement in time. It was probably less than £10 so was put down to experience.

That is the plan and I have already contacted the seller. Being paranoid about eBay having spent too much time in the “Lounge” I’m wondering if this is an elaborate scam that involves sending products with 2X value and counting on a return

Its all in your favour
You open case seller has due time to respond. He is pretty much obliged to use e bays managed return service. You then pack up item print off label return it get receipt for sent item
He refunds if he doesn't e bay do

He asked me to open a return under “changed my mind”. He sent me a return label and I will send it back.

I realize this may be a risk on my part but he has been communicating well and seems genuinely sorry for the mix up. I do not think he knows I have 3 Ecobees though.

I will report back if I have been gullible.

Ordered a gopro case, got a toy soldier with a parachute. Ebay seller offered 50% discount if I kept it! Must have been a scam.

No
He sent wrong item. Changed your mind means its at his discretion if he refunds you. He probably will but by asking you to cover up his mistake he is behaving a trifle dodgy.
E bays managed return service is something I as as both a seller and buyer have to abide by.
My suspicion is he may have a few incorrect items sent out problems and is trying to protect his seller status score.

I had lemon item and mentioned it as such to the seller and I would like to return it for another, within 5 minutes I got a notification that I had a full refund as "buyer has canceled item", now I think my lemon was a fake and the person did it so I cant put feedback up.

It's not worth starting another thread over so i'll put it here:

What happens when an item is genuinely lost by the Post office? I ordered, vendor sent (has proof of posting) item never arrived and Ebay inquest is set up.
It's hardly worth me bothering with, but I wondered who would lose?

I run a small ebay shop, if this happens (and it does a lot!), I'd refund or replace the item and recoup my costs from Royal Mail. There's a spreadsheet you can fill out for multiple lost items that you just email across to the Royal Mail.

Thanks for the reply, I agree, vendor will claim back from PO.

Ordered an ex-demo laser printer for £100. Brand new printer arrived, with duplex device (duplex cost £100 new).

It also came with a £25 Amazon voucher from Xerox.

Ordered a cake mixer for the Mrs for Christmas (she bakes as a hobby before I get any stick for it). Noticed that the factory eBay outlet price for the same mixer is £300 less. Mixer arrives, basically has a box that says factory outlet on it, mixer and contents are exactly the same and brand new.
