The manual states you should charge the battery via the terminal posts, under the bonnet.

This isn't very practical in my garage setup and I always charged my 981 via the smokers pack ciggy lighter. Been trying to charge the Macan via one of the power outlets (ciggy lighter type socket), but it's been on for a few days and not reached 'maintain' yet.

Anyone know if I'm wasting my time, due to some 'switching' arrangement in the wiring system?

The Macan's electrical network is monitored by various ECU's - the charging sockets and other non-critical systems are isolated after switch-off after threshold voltages are breached. Once the system has been put to sleep it needs to be woken again before its function returns.

Generally, if you connect the charge source to the car with the engine running (so the system voltage is high); the charging will remain active after switch-off. If the sockets have been switched off already the charging is ineffective - they are no longer connected to the main system.

Hardwiring a socket to the under bonnet connections is a better option - and one OPC's use in showrooms to keep their cars tip-top.

The OPC fitted a CTek battery condition indicator lead directly to the battery for me before I picked up the car. I now just reverse the car up to the garage...... uncoil the lead from the boot and connect it to the charger which stays in the garage.

Word of warning on the Macan, not sure if it is an issue with them but I didn’t use my car for about 3 weeks whilst I was away with work and, just as I was boarding the plane, the OH called to say “the car alarm is going off, I can’t get in the car..... yada, yada......”

Needless to say I couldn’t do anything about until my return a week later. Tried recovering the battery with the ctek but it was too far gone. So, called out the AA, they jump started it and then all was fine and I put the ctek on to recover it once there was some charge in the battery.

Now I always make sure the car is run once a week or else hooked up to the ctek.

Thanks for replies. I will try Popes advice of connecting before switch off first?

Think I've sussed the problem, as I've now connected to under bonnet posts and still no luck? My 1998 Accumate, suitable for AGM batteries etc, only has a charge rate of 1.2A. Instructions only mention batteries up to 75aH, but I think the Macan is 92aH? I've ordered a Ctek MXS 5.0 as that can handle 110aH batteries (from near flat) and charges at 5A.

Always managed all previous cars, 911's, 981, M3 etc, but did take its time with the Q5.

Suppose it doesn't owe me much by now at £45 over 19 years!
