Evening,

Rattling noise at idle that goes away once the clutch is depressed.

No issues when driving.

How do I work out which bearing has failed ?

The release bearing was changed 20k miles ago, but could have failed again ?

Getrag 6 speed box with Sachs release bearing.

I don't think there are any release bearings left, so lay shaft failure might be the best result !!!

Thanks

Del

I would have thought if the rattle goes just as the clutch is pressed it's the bearing, if it doesn't go until the pedal is on the floor it's in the box.

It's the gearbox-google "Getrag rattle" and you'll find it's something lots of them do,from the one in my 30 year-old BMW right up to new ones.

It's annoying but doesn't do any damage.

Seconded, it's the box. Have had 3 or 4 and all did it to larger or smaller extent.

Release bearings make noise when the clutch is depressed, not when it's up. Bearings and shafts rattle when the clutch is up and the noise stops when it's depressed.
