mitsubishi GTO gear linkage issue

hi guys..ive had my GTO for a little while now but it has an issue with gear selection..instead of the gearstick resting in line with 3rd gear, its resting in line with first making it a pain in the neck when going from 2nd trying not to hit 5th..any ideas...tia

If that's all clear then it has to be something else.

With any manual 5 speed box the shift mechanism is normally spring loaded to line up with 3rd/4th.
If the spring is tired/broken this will mean the stick won't line up correctly.
Another possibility is knackered bushes. Check all of them.
