My usual everyday car is a rust free E36 328 which I am in the process of spending many thousands on upgrading.

Given it is rather lovely and has has a lot of cash thrown its way, I don't want to use it when the grit is down, no doubt in the next few weeks.

So I have been thinking of getting a winter hack - anyone else thinking the same and what are you going for?

Given I have a 1 year old son and don't currently have anything with rear doors, I was thinking I may experience that particulatlr luxury for a few months...

Not intending to this year, but in recent years I've had a Peugeot 306 Dturbo; VW Golf TDI 130; Nissan Primera DCi SVE and Volvo S70 T5 to do the winter duties. The Peugeot and the Golf were the best.

I keep a '99 Honda hrv 4x4 at the yard for bad weather. It's on winter tyres and never fails to start one year to the next or go wrong in any way.

If I was to but any older car as a snotter it would certainly be Japanese.

I am thinking Volvo V70, Toyota Avensis or an old Merc. Something reliable, majors in comfort and easy to sell in the spring...

Thanks but I am more a VAG hater to be honest. They really do nothing for me. Much rather a Honda TBH.

I'm not a vag fan - even though we own 2 of them but as a winter spotter the golf and toe rag make good buys, assuming they don't need any work. If not a crv or old c class would be on my list. Although the c class would have to be equipped with cloth as the leather equipped ones seem to lack heated seats.

would have to be a SpecB for a winter hack, just be surprised when you leave lots of RWD cars trailing in your wake

Thanks for this thread, this is exactly what I'm looking for too.

Is there anything experienced PHers have seen on Autotrader, Ebay or here on PH that you'd be happy to drop £3k on and know that it would be very unlikely to have any major faults on it? Then I can put the winter tyres on it and sell it again in spring. We had a very icy 2016 around my area, I'd like to have a backup this year.

High driving position, big boot (pram and weekly shopping) and automatic transmission would be great but I'm fairly relaxed

I do hate Audis but this is more something to take the grit rather than me needing serious off road ability.

Saying that, the practicality of an off road we does appeal.

And I am thinking shed money budget..

Would something like this be any good? Volkswagen Phaeton 3.0 TDI V6 4Motion:

https://tinyurl.com/y94sxpa3

The damage looks superficial and something maybe a good Chipsaway person can have a look at. Get some winter tyres on it and you have a lot of car for your money.

I don't know much about Phaetons though so perhaps more experienced PHers can enlighten me

I would say either a Corolla/Avensis (petrol), Focus (Mk I) or 306. Any of those with winter tyres should be fine.

Love that AX by the way!

We have a tatty snotter spec Toyota Rav4. Goes surprisingly well as its a 2.0 petrol.

Don't really need it as our others cars are either snotter spec or heading that way.
