I have a single cylinder kohler mower it stalled on long grass - it sounded like a multi cylinder that was only running on one.

It restarted easily but still sounded the same, eventually after playing with the throttle I could start it at low revs and then increase them and it now sounded fine, however as soon as I engaged the blades it either stalled or again sounded like it dropped a cylinder - remembering it only has the one !

As the start of the season it wouldn't start and I cleaned the carb - which wasn't visibly dirty.

It also has a recent plug and filter.

Any suggestions before I change the coil - as I can't see what else there is.

It sounds like it could be the carburettor....

Possible faulty plug? If you've still got the old one and if it ran OK on it then refit & see what happens.

Nearly always crap in the carb. Or old/no fuel.

New(ish) fuel in the tank, 3/4 full - was cutting fine 2 weeks ago.

Surely misfiring is coil ?

However I'll happily whip it off and take a look.

No. Misfiring could be caused by anything affecting the mixture, spark strength/timing or compression. The coil is only one of many possible causes.

Not sure what the carburettor is like on your machine, but I know from owning many petrol garden toys, that they can be very temperamental once they've been fiddled with. The symptoms you've described, do sound like a carb issue - have you tried adjusting the idle speed?

My guess is a blocked main jet, or perhaps water in the fuel, you can usually get to these quite easily by removing the float bowl.

How often do you have to do that?

If it was long wet grass then possibly jammed blades and a safety cut out has clicked in.
Maybe check handbook?
Mine will do this if it gets blocked with wet grass.

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

Check the flywheel hasn't moved on the crank. I have seen this happen on a rotary mower when the blade suddenly jamed, and it screws the ignition timing.

I had similar thing with my Briggs and Stratton, but with a scaffolding clamp left by some roofers. It was difficult to start and ran really rough.
I stripped the top down to find the keyway in the aluminium flywheel had been enlarged by the sudden stop. This put the timing out enough to cause poor running.
