strange noise

at first i thought it was gearbox whine, but it happens with the clutch pressed in as well, then i thought it might be the ps/oil/water pumps, now i'm not so sure

it sounds like a pump cavitating, but only happens between 2500 and 3000 rpm and more noisier when driving than when stationary. it also only happens once the car has warmed up, so that leads me to believe that something is expanding and possibly rattling. oil, water, and ps fluid are all topped up.

any ideas?

Also have the air con pump, not that i know if it would make a noise but might be worth testing it anyway. Power steering is easy to diagnose cos it usually gets noisier when you turn to full lock if there is air in the system.

I had a sort of sucking/gurgling noise every now and then before the powersteering went odd. Looked at the fluid which had gone grey, changed it and all problems and noises vanished. Jonny
