HiYa Blairvoter,
I'm glad you noticed. This is new safety technology developed to reduce vehicle collisions and is known within BMW as an "idiot light". It illuminates whenever a complete Fuqwit gets too close to the rear of the car. Hope this helps.

I was following a BMW to work today. As we approached a roundabout, this amber flashing light came on on the rear near side quarter. I have never seen this before on a BMW and I wondered what it signified. He did turn left shortly afterwards, so I couldn't ask him
Ahhh he must have got the new BMW optional extra fitted of a "dyrecshun idycatetor" and knocked the switch by mistake

I'm just naturally curious and as you don't normally see this sort of thing I thought I would ask what the light meant
The lights an indication that I'm asking the guy behind to do something.
If theres nothing he needs to do on my account I don't use it.
If the guy behind needs that light in order to avoid a collision or to tell when he has to use the brake then I am obviously doing something wrong with my driving or he's doing something wrong with his.

Damn Herr Bliarout, you missed out on some action there. He knew you were on the other bus and it was a secret signal for you to follow him for some nonsensemongering.
Ach well, you'll know the next time.

Every
wit on the road is a moron. I too have fallen into the trap of thinking every one around me has the same level of intellect and can hear my thoughts.
But they can't.
The lights on the BMW are a swing indicator.
When teeing off, if you're leaning a little the car will tell you to compensate by flashing its lights.
Now come on guys, tongue in cheek
, but this is a Pistoheads site.
Its motto should be in the absence of common sense from the government or its agencies I use my own.
The one speed fits all occasions speed cameras are a case in point, so are the one speed limit fits all conditions.
So I expect better of the PH community than to stereotype car owners or to cling to stupid government correctness like 'thou wilt use your indicator while turning despite there being noone to see you do it' and lets make fun of anyone who doesn't.
See indicators and headlight for that matter for what they are, a way of telling someone your intentions if they don't seem to be aware, or if you are asking them to do something.

Having owned several TVRs ( and contemplating a Sagaris) I find it a relief that the only flashing lights in my BMW are in fact the indicators, normally the flashing lights I have been used to in my Chimaera and Cerbera have been oil pressure warning lights or MIL lights.....
and yes, I did pay extra for the little orange flashers....
