Fast all rounder 6k
Discussion
Have just sold my Elise S2 and 200bhp Mx5. I'm reducing my fleet to just a single car so am looking for the best all rounder car, something with back seats, a boot, not crazy expensive to run, fun and needs to be able to do the odd track day. Where I'm living the road tax on anything above 2 litres is very expensive and anything above 2.5 is out of the question.
I had my mind set on an R26 renaultsport megane but have since read a few horror stories about massive maintenance costs so am now looking for any alternatives. Cars I'm considering the renaultsport clio 197 and a modified golf gti mk5, but not sure if this would be any good at all on track?
Anyone have experience of any of these cars and have any advice or can offer any alternatives? I've also considered a wrx impreza but worried these may attract too much attention in the city centre.

I've got an R26. I've spent £1500 in 6 months,(with me doing all the work except the cambelt) but its just about there now. Although it could do with new front disc's and pad if I wanted to do a track day in it. I bought it cheap knowing it needed the work doing, so not as bad as it sounds.
They are a little bit high maintenance, but all the problems are well documented and easily sorted. Most parts are cheap if you can find OEM parts. I haven't been to Renault for anything other than the parts for the cambelt, Etc. They are surprisingly capable cars and the grip from the front wheels defies belief.
The problem I found when buying one was, they have come into the price range of cheap, moron owners, who buy one of the best handling FWD cars ever, but are happy to put cheap tires on and ride around with worn suspension and knocking bushes.

What bracket does the rx8 come into for tax where you stay?
I'm in Ireland. I hadn't thought of an rx8, some owners have messaged to get them taxed as a 1.3/1.7 so that might be an option, otherwise they're taxed as a 2.6 and I think the tax then would be €2350How would these stand up to track work in standard form? Don't the engines have a tendency to go pop?

I think you may have missed the bit where the OP said the road tax on anything above 2 litres is very expensive and anything above 2.5 is out of the question where he lives!E39 M5
