One for the techs please. A friend had a prop shaft bearing go on his touareg about 15 months ago. The local independent garage sourced a new prop shaft from VW and carried out the repair. About £800. Recently is went again.

The part did come with a 24 month VW warranty. VW, however have rejected the claim stating 'there is no evidence the garage used new stretch bolts'.

What evidence would there be? Itemised on the repair invoice? Can they tell a bolt is original/new from 18 months ago?

Sounds like a cop out to me.

I can't comment on this but I had new flex discs 24 months ago, the prop bolts are still bright and shiny.

One would think a well know independent garage would know to get NEW bolts. They only cost £2.33 each and there are 6 of them. Perhaps they did. VW are pointing to the repairers invoice, saying, where is are the bolts billed to the customer. Repairer says, we don't itemise bolts. VW say, sod off on your warranty then.

I'm interested to know how the non-use of stretch bolts would cause the bearing to fail.

It's typical VW-look for a way to avoid paying up.

I would think the warranty would be at the repairers door.

It probably is but it's a classic case of, talk to VW and VW say, talk to the garage who did the work. It's not a cheap fix, £1200. Just a pile of aggravation to resolve.

They're right though, talk to the garage.
