What are you doing, what's your pyro stash looking like?

We're planning to go to one of the local displays on Saturday and then I've gone for the Lidl 3 for £20 selection to have a little display in the garden on Sunday. Not bad deal really 18 piece selection box, pack of 7 rockets that look semi decent, and a 19 shot cake / barrage. Wanted more but if we're doing a display as well then it's probably enough frown

Looking forward to it smile

(Fireworks haters look elsewhere biggrin)

No pro stash, but we are going to Cranleigh for their annual fireworks event on Saturday evening, usual routine of get there, meet mates in the pub, have some drinks, wander over to watch them light the bonfire, try our hand at the stty carnival games/dodgems and then watch the fireworks display, set to music, whilst enjoying some hot spiced rum drink to keep the chills away

I always have a few fireworks in the back garden, a bit of a fire going in the chimenea and make my version of the family recipe corned beef & potato pie served with mushy peas, pickled beetroot & red cabbage. Home grown beetroot for the first time this year.

Trouble is, Mrs. 1879 is arguing that we should do something on the 4th as it's a Saturday night and I'm insistent that it should be on the 5th; you wouldn't have Christmas day on 24th December etc.

Whichever day we go for it'll be a few of the big multi-shot cakes for ease of display. PITA lighting a crappy little volcano or roman candle for it to puff out a bit of green smoke and die five seconds later.

My missus has this convoluted idea that we should have Christmas dinner on Christmas Eve so that we have more time to open presents / play with the kids on Christmas Day. Doesn't feel right to me but I've given up trying to suggest otherwise. She hates Christmas anyway, never had a good time of it with her family.

Anyway, back to fireworks....

The French celebrate on Christmas Eve with dinner.

Most of the big organised displays around here are on a Saturday evening as there is less impact on traffic on a Saturday evening than on a weekday, and its usually when the events are. But with so many places competing for business, they have had them on the last 2 weekends at places near here, as well as the next 2 weekends at other places.

but then the really big displays (Lewes, etc) will always have theirs on the 5th, no matter what day of the week that is, and close off the whole town and loads of roads, which is disruptive to those people who cannot use a calendar and plan ahead that they might have to make alternative arrangements for work that day to account for the people coming into the town.

I do generally prefer going on the Saturday rather than on a "work night" because I can enjoy a few more drinks smile

There is definitely a bigger spread in displays when the 5th doesn't fall on a Friday or Saturday.

Good (for me) when it falls mid week!

Going to a couple of council displays over the weekend on the Wirral..

Does anyone here live between Chester and Tarporley?

I live on the western edge of Delamere Forrest and every year there is a huge display that takes place to the south of us somewhere towards Tarvin/Waveton/Tattenhall.

They seem to have absolutely enormous fireworks, but I have never been able to find out where it is - I have only ever seen/heard it at a distance. I thought it might be Eaton gold club - but it doesn't say anything on their website.

Oulton park has a pretty large display on along with a rally.

The Lewes display is on Saturday! Not sure why its not on Sunday. However they are making it difficult for non-locals to attend, no trains stopping at Lewes from early afternoon, roads closed, no buses.

I have my 4 year old son, so I have a couple of small selection boxes and sparklers from Tesco...... should be fine as he isn't so keen on very loud noises (was very glad about the ear defenders at Herne Bay airshow for the Eurofighter).
There are likely to be lots from the neighbours too plus a display at Mote Park in Maidstone, we have a handy vantage point some way up the hill opposite.

We're going to Chester race course this year, £6 to 'get in' looking forward to it.

Lewes has never run on the Fifth when the Fifth falls on a Sunday (although, yes, it does tend to over run into the Sunday).

This is not due to the oft thought of religious reasons, but more to do with the fact that in bygone days, the Boyes would have been in Church themselves on Sunday morning, so were unable to make the preparations for the evening's celebrations, so it was moved to the Saturday.

On the subject of access, I do urge anyone thinking of traveling to Lewes on Saturday to consider going to a display more local to them instead. Access will be awful and once you're in, there's no getting back out again easily until the early hours. It will be crowded, it will be noisy and looking at the forecast, it looks like being a bit moist as well, so if standing pinned together on a pavement while lots of flames and noise pass close by is not likely to be your thing, best to not bother.

Rye's probably a bit easier, so I might go to that, poss stop over. Iirc there was something to do with the trains in previous years, trying to prevent disruptive yobs from Ashford/Hastings..

My stash is empty frown

Did a home one last year, toddler was terrified. So this year we are going to a school one, they have an early quieter display and then a noisier one later on.

Have bought earguards for him so not too loud.

Rye is on the 11th, not sure of any travel restrictions, but best to check. Battel is also this weekend. Again, I'd advise avoidance.
