Started parkrun 16 months ago, first 5k attempt took me 39 minutes, now doing generally 26-28 minutes. Still a couple of stone too heavy so never find it easy

Always muttered to myself I would never do more than 5k but recently thought maybe I should try

So today I just said sod it and ran 5k down the road, then back

Set out to do 6 minute kms and finished in 1hr 1 min. Fairly hilly route so I'm pretty chuffed. No walking either

Have to say other than a bit more sore than usual, it was little different to 5km. You just carry on lol

Good work and well done. Keep at it. Small increases in distance at a time are the key so don't overdo it.

I'm going to do my first Parkrun on Saturday and my intention is that 5K will be the maximum distance, although reading your story I can see me doing the same at some point too.

parkrun is amazing, 148 runs in across 52 different locations (including a flight to Dublin) I am pretty addicted.

It is a gateway to the sport, and I know so many people who started off that way thinking 5k on a Saturday morning was all they wanted to do... they now include marathoners, club runners, ultra runners... Though for some parkrun is everything all they want which is great. Such a great thing in my opinion.

Well done!

Did my first 10k back in September (58 mins) having previously mastered 5ks though I built up to mine so I didn't find it too hard. I now try to do a 10k every week. Undecided about trying for a half marathon, bit more commitment involved by all accounts.

I would definitely echo that, I've now done 53 parkruns in 68 weeks, I would never had got close to that consistency without the organised event.

From memory I have missed a couple due to illness, one due to horrendous ice/snow, the rest due to holidays/weekends away etc.

Saturday 9am is just now parkrun time, it feels wrong when I have to miss it.

I've been doing a shorter 2.25k Great Run Local course each Sunday with my 8 year old daughter for a few months now and the Parkrun is at the same venue (Gibside in Gateshead) on Saturday so at least parts of the course will be familiar.
I've done some 3k runs in appx 15mins and did a 5k on the treadmill in 29m 25s. Just need to pace myself as I have a tendency to try and go too fast.
I'm looking forward to it smile

Greendog - you're local to me then!

Gateshead (at Saltwell park) is my home parkrun, though I've not been there in a while.

Gibside is fantastic, but a tough route - fast final mile though.

I've done all the North East parkruns and most are fantastic, Newcastle is my least favourite as it simply gets too busy now (though my pb is there).

Haven't done a Great Local event yet, but a few in my club go.

parkrun is awesome! Am currently on 199 - undecided whether to do my 200th tomorrow or wait for my youngster to catch up so we can do our 200th together next month...

I couldn't see the point in driving somewhere to run 5km when I first heard of it but we quickly started doing parkrun as a family and I think it's fantastic. Plus it can be absolutely brutal if you really push yourself. I love the fact that you get national if not world class athletes all the way down to people starting out on a walk/run or C25K campaign plus everything inbetween. Really friendly atmosphere too. I'm also based in the north east and we have 20 or so different events within an hours drive so plenty of variety.

106 now.

Flatts Lane is brilliant.

Hilly trail and my second slowest ever parkrun. 😀

That's mega - 43 different for me. I'll be happy making it to 50, never mind 100 different ones!

Lyme Park is challenging - especially in the winter months as even the downhill grassy bits were tricky when we did it...

Nice, I've done a bunch of parkruns myself. Normally in the 27/28min range which makes me one of the slower guys in my age category. Yet to break 50% on the age related thingie. Have to say the stats reporting on the website are pretty impressive. My wife is nuts about parkrun and gets v cranky if she misses one!

Lyme is on my list. Along with the rest of the NT runs. Have done about 12 of them so far.

It is at least a year out of date. There are a few patches on it where I have added ones I have done, but it really needs redoing.

Hat tip though! Notice you've done a bunch in the NE of England, any recommendations on good 'uns? We are on the Newcastle -> Amsterdamage ferry on the Saturday over the Easter weekend next year and 'er in-doors wants to do a Parkrun earlier that day. Plan is to drive down from Aberdeen the night before, get a hotel, run, shower and then mooch about before the ferry.
