Porsche MOT's Essex
Discussion
I am quite fanatical with my 966 Turbo and it's servicing / MOT's etc and have kept it being serviced religiously at JZM Porsche as well as MOT's but wondered if anyone know of a reliable / reputable / Porsche indie place to get the MOT carried out in Essex, Southend area, so I have an alternative for the MOT, as it's a fair drive from where I live to JZM.

HP Motorsport in Hainault are highly recommended. Looks like a ramshackle old garage but they know their stuff. Bit of a trek for you but a lot closer than JZM.
Mercury in Brentwood (next to Design 911) will do a job for you as well, but they're not officially Porsche specialists.
FWIW I've used Mercury a few times for some alignment work on one of my older 911's. They seem to know their stuff on all bar the very newest Porsche's, always been good with appointments and professional (imo).Mercury in Brentwood (next to Design 911) will do a job for you as well, but they're not officially Porsche specialists.
Forgive me for asking but does it really really matter where you get it MOT’d? It’s not like they do anything mechanical to the car, is it? Servicing, I can understand you being fussy but not so much an MOT.
That said, D&G Motors by Priory Park have always been very sympathetic to my TVR. Never had a problem with the emissions either

Thanks for the info, I understand that MOT is just an basic safety test of the car, just never really thought you could trust Halfords etc with such specialist cars as 911 turbos. Always felt it safer to keep it within a Porsche specialist but you maybe right and it doesn’t really matter for an MOT.
Absolutely no need or benefit in 'specialist'.
I always take mine to a place that is actually a specialist in commercial vehicles! It's a hoot seeing it next to some huge coach. But I stay with it throughout chatting to the old skool guy who does it who is a great classic car enthusiast (Alvis etc). He is actually OCD thorough so there's probably more chance of him finding anything amiss, but I trust him and the establishment completely.
I go there because he takes such care and is so meticulous. The daily driver goes to local Halfords which as earlier poster says always has offer on, and has never in years tried to add unnecessary work. If there's ever been an advisory or rare fail I take car away and do the work myself.
Nothing is done to the car or removed in an MOT test. Do the lights/washers etc work? Is the headlight alignment OK (done by machine)? Are the brakes adequate and balanced (done by machine)? Any leaks (done by inspection)? Any torn boots (done by inspection)? Any worn suspension joints (done by shaking the thing like mad under the new regs, and the most intrusive test insofar as tester tugs at wheels)? Are emissions within spec (done by machine and sensor poked up exhaust). I can't think of anything Porsche-specific that would call for the tester to have specific knowledge, but interested if anyone knows different!
