We have 2 Airs on the credit card and a £3k pro on lease, we need two more Pros for 2 new devs and I’m concerned that on the lease can they come after the signatory directly if the company stops paying or is it within the ltd company?
On the lease Pro they sent right through my personal credit before saying yes - company is 18 months and about to file 1st year accounts.

TLDR if this doesn’t work I don’t want to be on the hook for £9k if laptop

As above what does the contract say. What development are you doing that requires a £3k laptop? I assume it's Apple specific (macOS / iOS) as that would be the only justification I could see for using Macs.

For a start up my suggestion woul be to get a couple of refurbished 2015 models and save yourself £3k or even better use a cloud based solution (I use MacInCloud)

Our main man had his own Mac that was a £2500 one in 2015, I believe you dont use your own kit at work so replaced it, the new devs are ok with £1100 Macbook Pros apparently on offer at Costco so thats what were doing.
Personally I use a 10 year old Sony all in one but all I do is email and send invoices out!

Lease/finance companies will quite often request a personal guarantee from a director for a new-ish company.

£3k for a laptop would be a ridiculous price!
the reality is that the software is the same on Mac or PC unless you have some very specific needs...
I run a PC as my main development machine, and have a Mac laptop as my 'out of office' machine - both equally capable, both running full Office 365 and Adobe CC suites - both quite capable of doing everything I need from managing servers to coding to office admin
Is there a specific need why you require macs? I thought you were doing mainly development - in which case you need very little power, and most devs prefer PCs as they are far more hackable (though the unix base for the mac appeals to some!) I certainly wouldn't be spending that money on kit for kit for staff in a new / young company...

do they need laptops, or would a desktop do the same job? something like this: http://www.dell.com/en-uk/work/shop/desktop-and-al... is just over £300 + VAT - spend a bit more money to up the RAM, a monitor like this: http://www.dell.com/en-uk/work/shop/dell-24-ultras... is sub £200 - you are all in with a very capable workstation for around £6-700

or you can find many options cheaper than that... spend the money where it brings in value - modern kit is so capable, that there are few roles in most businesses that really justify expensive kit...

Like a company car, a laptop (especially for a dev) means something more than just the sticker price

If a company struggles to recruit & retain top sales talent because the company car policy only includes hyundais and Kias when said talent want BMWs and Audis, then there is a decision to make

Same applies on it gear. If top devs want a MacBook Pro and competitors offer that versus your cheap desktop, you have a decision to make

The £3k one was a like for like replacement he had one himself and spent his own cash on one so its only fair to replace.

The DG on the lease is me on the hook regardless of Velstar trading or not, however I am not prepared to add more to this so new dev 1 gets a Mac book pro apprentice dev 2 will get a desktop from Dell (thanks)

I have noticed young code monkeys love the Mac and its a very much "ive got a mac" feel good factor and JEEZ we looked everywhere for our front end developer I am not pissing him off on a laptop (we didnt use an agency so I feel ok - I hate agencies who will tap them up for a move after your contract has passed)

Probably would've spent the cost of a Mac on an agency's fees anyway wink

Fair points - but I would still have replaced his computer with one sufficient / fit for purpose - not such an expensive one - if you want to retain the dev. I would have put the difference into a bonus payable on xxx time in job...

as for devs liking sexy kit that is probably a reflection on the new generation of developers who seem to spend more time plugging together libraries than actually coding! The old school coder wouldn't have touched a Mac with its lack of ability to personalise / hack it!
