Starting a new job in the new year & need to think about potential car choices.

All in I expect to do ~30k PA. It's an hour each way to work on average (fortunate with roads).

I came from an early F11 touring, which was funded through my current employment - on a salary negotiation I stepped away from having a car & currently have an E91 320D Touring, which is an annoying manual.

Trouble is, it's too small. I need something around the size of the F11, and I want something a bit more comfortable, being over 6ft.

Currently thinking along the lines of a later F11 530d touring. Buy at a couple of years old with a low a mileage as possible, run it for 3 years & sell before the mileage is bonkers, rinse and repeat. I'd consider a smaller engine'd F11 as well.

Obvious question is what else should I consider on the large estate persuasion, that's a nice place to be, and cane cope with a decent mileage & still be worth something at the end?

I have tried to like the A6 & E-Class, but I really struggle with the interiors of them.

I've looked into a few lease options (new G31 series for example) but the numbers are mental, given the mileage at this point.

Volvo V60 or V70? Depends how much depreciation you're willing to take.

Well, depreciation is a consideration, I don't want to be ruined by it, but I am realistic and expect 90k on a car in 3 years is going to hit anything fairly hard.

Why does it have to be so new? 30k/year on high value stuff will collapse the value. Bear in mind that the G31 has been released so will hammer f11 values.

I'd consider an e60 525d/530d <100k miles, stick a warranty onto it (monthly) and enjoy. Comprehensive warranty is expensive @ £153/month but its less than depreciation on a more expensive car and will give you plenty of peace of mind.

Well this is the battle of the decision process.

The E60 to me feels old & outdated now, much like my E91. It's a massive step backwards from the F11 interior.

Leasing a G31 would be a semi serious option, but it's so new at the moment the costs involved are a bit silly. If I could make the numbers work from that side of things, it would be an option (or something similar).

Not as glamourous as a 530d estate but decent kit, turn of pace and fuel economy for that distance...

Having been in an f10 recently, I felt that the interior was better put together in my e60. Infotainment is worse but retrofittable

If the e60 isn't good enough, how about an f11 520d:

I used to do 30k/year in company cars, I then elected to move to run my own car and get remunerated for mileage. I bought a 4 year old 530d and even though it was near bullet proof, I lost a significant amount when I sold it a year later. I'd be very wary of spending big money in your situation, in fact I'd be looking at a nicely specced Mk4.5 Mondeo estate:

They're comfortable, reliable mile munchers - you could easily put 100k on any of those.

I find it hard to believe that any mainstream car, that's not some rock hard track day weapon, is not comfy enough for an hour at each end of the day.

Yes, I do struggle with the interior on the E60 - it's enough to put me off, same with my E91 sadly.

The 2.0TD on the F11 is an option - although wary of the N47 engine & it's timing chain issues, even on newer cars, i'd have to warranty it for peace of mind. The 2.0 engine on a couple of F11's I have driven is good enough for what I need for bumbling along to work & back.

A £10/12k F11 might actually make a bit more sense.

The mileage is the killer, annoyingly.

Have been in a few more near new mainstream cars (Mondeo/Octavia/etc) and my 7 year old 3 series is better screwed together than all I have been in, which I find bonkers & is a reason why I couldn't really consider one. I'd rather spend a bit more and have something I was happy with.

Possibly too small for you but after my F11 I have a W205 C Class.

I find it just as relaxing (maybe more relaxing and comfortable) than the BMW and it returns nearly 60MPG (C220d) vs 45MPG from my 520d on similar driving.

My colleague at work does exactly the same mileage as you, 4 days a week. He's just got a Skoda Kodiaq DSG 2.0D.

He also has 5 kids, but he loves it compared to his old Scirocco.
