Any Golf players on here?
Discussion
Hi All
I've started playing Golf regularly again just a quick question about something i've never been able to do! How do I put back spin on the ball? I want to be able to land it on the green and get to either stop dead or bounce back not roll forwards! I'm guessing I need to address the ball differently to normal but I not sure how!
Thanks,
Phill.

Edited to say the title should say Golfers not Golf Players! Not with it today!

I'd agree with incorrigible.
I've been playing more than 10 years, never got my handicap below 20 and only hit backspin by accident.
But if you want to know the theory...
Normally when you or I strike the ball off the ground, the club is at its lowest point, i.e. the club is travelling roughly horizontally at the point of impact, this should put neither top or back spin on the ball.
If you watch the pro's, particularily off the fairways, they take a big divot when they strike the ball. This is because the club is still on the way down i.e. the lowest point of the swing is actually in front and below the position of the ball.
This imparts backspin onto the ball as the club cuts down the back of the ball on impact.
Similarily this is why we are taught to play tee shot with our woods with the ball further forward in our stance, so that the club is on it's way back up, putting topspin onto the ball adding distance and causing the ball to kick forward on landing.
Hope this helps...
Now can anyone cure my slice?

Not even worth trying until you can consistently get good contact with the ball. It takes good, clean contact and dirt-free grooves. FWIW try imagining the ball is just to the left of where it is (if you're RH) and you'll probably start making better contact.
And tip of the day is: don't listen to all the amateur coaches out there. Just go out, whack the ball around and enjoy yourself. When you start reading all the books, listening to theories, etc it becomes less enjoyable. If you really want to improve, get a few lessons from a pro.

pmanson - I used to play a lot of golf, although I've been out for a couple of years with dodgy knees (and funnily enough, the older I get the better I was).
Backspin is generated by the clubhead making 'perfect' contact with the ball, in such a way that the ball is 'pinched' by the leading edge, which forces the ball up over the grooves of the club, thus generating the spin.
A really easy way of learning how to get BIG backspin (don't even think about hitting a long/mid iron like this) is this:
1. Take a pitching wedge and address the ball with it just an inch forward of the centre of your stance*
2. Place another ball just 1/4 inch in front of the one that you've set up to hit.
4. Take your swing on a nice steep swingplane.
5. On the downstroke try to hit the ball in FRONT
6. With a little practice, you should be getting the ball that you addressed (i.e. the 'behind' ball) to get up nice and high with lots of lovely spin. You'll top the ball in front but don't worry about that (if you can get them both up with spin, you could start a travelling golf show
)
However, I have to say that in realiity backspin just comes with time and practice, as you start swinging on a nice plane and striking the ball well...
It also helps if you use a nice soft ball (spin's almost impossible with a rock-like budget ball) like a Pro V1 or a Callaway 'soft'.
HTH
*I always play a 1-iron/driver off my left heel, a PW an inch forward of middle and the other clubs between the two on a 'sliding scale'. Putting the ball towards the middle of the stance should help you to get spin...

The Harvey Pennick way was to encourage his students to take a really 'strong' grip (i.e. hands twisted round to the right (for an RH player)) and then try to hit the ball 45 degrees to the left of where they were aiming.
He'd make them do that until they were virtually duck hooking every shot as his theory was that it's easier to cure a hook than a slice!!

Shouldn't this be here?
You wanna watch golfing, it can be dangerous.
Actually the corrct phrase is: Impotent
I used to post about golf, so I feel it's my duty to point out that all clubs produce backspin. When the clubface makes contact with the ball, the ball slides up the clubface and is "gripped" by the club's grooves, which imparts backspin. The more lofted a club is, the more backspin it will produce. Also, aerodynamically, backspin produces lift which creates greater carry.
Although I fail to see the relevance of the post on a motoring forum.
Having said that, many of us drive Chimeara's, so it may have some minor relevance.
We did go through this a while ago though...
I cannot however comment, as I feel too overwhelmed by the pollution

Me too...
I guess it going to be one of those things that just takes practise!
Really enjoying playing again though I have to say.
Apart from the fact I seem to be able to hit my 5wood at the driving range perfectly straight but I get on the course and I slice it almost everytime. (Not good on the little course I play, where the first 3 holes are along the boundary of the course!
I think I am going to take a couple of lessons and see how I get on.
All good fun and a nice way to spend a summer's evening.
Also to let you know ordered a new putter and golf bag off these guys - www.thesportshq.com/ yesterday and its just arrived. (Went for the RAM Zebra putter as i've always wanted one!)

Hi Phil
This happens because on the range, you are concentrating on hitting it properly. On the tee, you are trying to melt it down the fairway. Relax, forget distance and let the club do the work
kim
Just have fun, there are too many people who try and keep up with big hitters, who just don't have the strength. Play your own game and if you need help, ask a pro. The best bit of advice I got was listening to Peter Alliss who said "play golf from green to tee. If you can be certain of getting the ball on the green comfortably from 150 yards, take the club which will get you 150 yards from the green. I.E. if the hole is 350 yds, take a club which you can hit 200 yds. There is not much point in hitting a club 275 yds if you can only get to the same position on the green from 75 yds as you would from 150 yards. You take a shorter club off the tee and have a greater chance of hitting the fairway." I used to take a driver off almost every tee when I had a high handicap but now I get it out about 4 or 5 times a round and am playing off 10.

I know! Its only happened on the last couple of rounds i've played but its still very annoying. I've taken to using my 5 iron off the tee instead. (I seem to be able to my 5 iron as far as my friend hits his 3 wood). The course we play at is short but very narrow which means I have to concentrate on getting it straight!
Get some lessons from a good pro. I've lost count of the number of people (hackers) i've played rounds with who have spent vast sums of money on the latest clubs but refuse to have a lesson because its a waste of money
To get backspin you have to hit the ball first and then the turf.... oh yes, and you have to hit it off the sweet spot.

Sorry to Hijack but saw little point in starting a new thread given that this is such a good one.
I live in SW6 and try to play golf every weekend now my rugby season is over. I am far from pro but hold my own, always looking for a game at a new course - anyone keen, drop me a line at my profile - always happy to travel an hour for a nice round....
Hijack over. Apologies
