Best way to sell a small amount of shares
Discussion
I have power of attorney for finance for my mother who has gone into care. She has a small holding of northern electric shares, worth around £1000 or so.
I need to sell them on her behalf but have not got a clue where to begin. Is there an easy way of doing this online and if so any recommended trader please?

Do you have the share certificates? If so you may find her bank will sell them for you (for a consideration). You will need to go through all the form filling to show you have LPA (if you have not dome so already). A lot of the on-line share dealing accounts will allow you to trade but I am not sure if you can open an account in someone else's name even with LPA - maybe someone else can advise? More complicated if you don't have the certificates. Will be interested to learn how you get on as I am doing probate following death of my mother and and she held a tiny holding in a private company but sorting this out by locating them and changing title is going to cost more than they are worth - even if we could sell them!!
just because you have a poa doesn't mean you have to use it.
Find out from whom she bought the shares, type up a letter instructing them to sell, possibly with a limit, get your Mother to sign it.
Maybe even a telephone instruction would do.
My Mother wishes to dispose of X, I have her sitting next to me.....

I have an even worse position, I have 8 individual HSBC shares which were a bonus issue, cost of selling them will exceed their value, so I just file them away. Crazy.
Presume that there is nothing else I could do?
I suppose what you could do is buy a whole lot more, hold them for a while and then sell them all together - hopefully at a profit. Depends whether you fancy HSBC. It is very difficult to know what to do with these tiny holdingsPresume that there is nothing else I could do?
