2002 Volvo V70 Has Landed!

Finally treated myself to a new banger. Paid banger money for it, however, it's rather better than that!
MY02 Volvo V70 in Silver with the 170hp variant of the 2.4 5 cylinder engine. 119,000 miles, cam belt done, full Volvo service history from one dealer until 2 months ago. I've found one scratch on the outside which should T-cut out and one little nick on the dashboard.
Engine sounds / feels really sweet. It's had a full service as part of the deal which sorted out some rattly drop links and CV gaiters which were an MOT fail item. It's now got a clean MOT sheet for a year & ready to go!
I can't believe how huge it feels - this is a good thing. My previous Rover 75 wasn't shorter but this thing feels vast to drive, although the 2.4 hustles along OK.
Really pleased with it, and I'm sure I'll find things to tidy up on it!

I'll be watching this with interest - I'm picking up an unseen eBay 2001 V70 2.4 on Saturday. Mine's the lowly 140bhp model with a manual box and 15" wheels, but at sub-£500 for 9 months MOT and (apparently) FSH I'm not complaining! I'm actually quite excited, it's been ages since I had a proper shed....

I picked up an blue '01 with the old audi 2.5 5 cylinder diesel for peanuts. Happily smokes about doing 50mpg easily. I had it for about three months before I discovered the awesome folding table and booster seats in the back that comes with the family pack! The most impressive thing is the complete lack of rust for a 16 year old car that has done 100000 miles plus.
Mine was sold cheap because the two rear doors wouldn't open- £10 on two new relays in the boot solved that! Also check the steering fluid reservoir; it should be the green chf-11- stuff but a lot of people stick ATF in them which is not good for the rack apparently. I replaced mine with the proper stuff and it's been fine so far.
edit: Also I got three keys with mine and two remote fobs, they were all equally minging so I bought this. You basically swap the insides from a remote fob, and then cut out the small transponder chip from a key (bit of a faff as it's about the size of a grain of rice!) and have the blank key cut, stick them all together and you have a nice new key for about £10!

I've no idea if I've got booster seats or picnic tables, so I shall be exploring tomorrow! Not that the back seats will ever be used but hey ho!
I've spoken with City Motors in Bristol who were very helpful. Even though I've got a stamped up history book, there's no accompanying invoices for anything. The service manager there knew the car without looking it up, and he reeled off lots of work they'd done to it in the past. Apparently it was chopped in for an XC with them earlier in the year and they just shoved it through auction.
The garage I bought it from has spent nearly £600 on bits and bobs including the service I wanted as it was due. It'll be going back to the same Volvo specialist when it needs work!

I do miss mine and i think they still look good even today and compared with the new mondeo they are not that long but they are wide.
I had to use the elec folding mirrors everytime i drove thru our local width restrictors but later found out the council had put them closer than they should of..
I sold mine a couple of years ago to a guy that has since been using it to transport timber for his gate building business and it is still going strong,they double as a decent sleeping area too with a nice camping mattress in the back

I was close to getting one of these a few weeks back. I had an S60 D5 pre-kids snd it remains one of the best cars I've owned. I'd been borrowing my dad's 2001 2.4 V70 for the past month and seriously considered getting one as they're fantastic cars (except for the fact the engine is installed sideways = s

Great things however they can be a tad overly complicated in terms of the electrics and the suspension and so compared to the previous V70 model, can be a bit more costly to run but they are infinitely better put together, refined and better equipped so for wafting around carrying crap, they're hard to beat. I had a V70 T5 on an X plate a couple of years back, bout for sub £300 and despite having a lazy Geartronic box that occasionally forgot what it's role in life was, I put well over 20k on it in a year with it only needing tyres and a second hand airflow meter then I sold it for four times what I paid.
The trick is not get attached and ignore niggles as niggles can be expensive so if it's a true shed, then as long as it starts, stops and turns then just run it and run it and don't be tempted to start replacing X, Y or Z or you'll end up in deep and probably end up too attached to it... they do tend to get under your skin. I've gone back to a previous V70 now, just a much more simple affair all round but these phase 2 cars are superb mile munchers... I had no issues doing 1000 mile trips in mine, probably thank in large to the fact they're almost silent at 80mph and the seats are remarkable.

Fantastic condition for the age. The ONLY issue is that the drivers door speaker doesn't work but I'm not really bothered about that.
Also, on the trip home from Basildon to Stowmarket, it achieved 75.7 mpg average, according to the computer

Although they’re similar cars they’re not similar at all. The 75 rode better at town speeds, but the Volvo feels much more planted at motorway speeds. It’s swings and roundabouts really - they’re both pretty good at what they do!Done 250 miles in the Volvo today and it’s been great. Very very quiet at 70mph and you feel very cocooned in it. Brilliant radio.
Only slight worry is a bit of tappet noise on the cold start this morning... I hope it’s not going to make a habit of that.
