My complete career change

Hi guys, maybe my situation will inspire some others...?

I’m 27 and I’ve been working as a farm manager for 7 years in my Dad’s successful farming business. To cut the long story short, I decided that I didn’t want to be a farmer for the rest of my life having done nothing else job-wise. It has been on my mind since last year but it’s only been the past 2 months where I’ve decided for sure (huge decision). I just lost all my enthauism and drive for the job.

I have no degree and average A-levels so half-decent potential jobs were always going to be hard to get into. One thing I have got is extremely strong determination and motivation. I have been looking at sales based jobs and trainee property agency jobs mainly.

Anyway, last month I made various versions of my CV + cover letters and started applying to jobs. Since then I’ve had 5 interviews and 2 job offers! I have provisionally accepted an offer for a sales based role for a well known company on average pay (more if you hit OTE’s) and I’m also feeling confident about a potential 3rd offer that I MAY get (I hear back this week).

So, if you are determined to make a life changing career change decision, you CAN do it, just like I did.

Maybe I’ll update this thread in 12 months to let you all know how I got on .

What are your Dad's plans now? Does the future of the farm rest with the Spare, or is he planning to sell it all and retire to a small London apartment?

My decision has affected his as yes, he’ll sell up within 10 years whereas originally I’d take over (if I stayed for the rest of my life). He’s got someone to take my place though.

Lovely. In that case, very best of luck, and now you have made the Big Decision, try not to settle for "good enough because they pay me". Some jobs are enormous fun, and it feels like theft to get paid for it

Good on you - I've recently had a big career change myself. Studied IT throughout my school and A- Level years, left school and went on to become a painter and decorator. After 4 years in the trade and the feeling of no real progression whatsoever, I quit nearly 2 months ago and now work in a better paid, better hours and better benefits job in IT - with a real chance for progression and development.

Just like yourself, a big change and decision to make - but with determination, anything is possible! I'm much happier now and strongly recommend to change careers if you're not happy with the one you are in, it's never too late..!
