Selling on Ebay, Etsy etc
Discussion
I think we have quite a few online retailers on here, so it seems like a good place to ask.
How important is it to have your own website? Or to put it another way, do you get many sales on your own website if you mostly just list items on the above sites?
I'm thinking along the lines of advertising on their sites, but trying to subtly drive traffic to your own website? I have often Googled the Ebay store name and gone to their own website. Or it's in the contact details on the site anyway, so it's not like they'll try and stop you from linking to it? It must be a common tactic amongst retailers?
It seems there is nothing stopping you having your company name as the shop name, so a simple Google will point them in the right direction? I see plenty of sellers who do this, so I guess it's not a problem?
I think I recall a thread recently where Ebay were stopping pictures with watermarks or contact details to direct away from there, so it looks like they are going to try and crack down a bit more on it? And I know from a recent sale, if you take cash on collection and cancel an ad, they're not particularly impressed, so my account won't last long if I advertise stuff for collection and took cash.
I can't see just a website getting any views or sales without some serious marketing/SEO which = lots of expenditure I'd like to avoid. This is going to be more of a side business, so I don't want to throw loads at it just yet.
I'm thinking of trying the above to see if the products sell, then if there appears to be a market for it, put a bit of money into a website in the hope the majority of sales will then come through that.
It seems quite simple to start off, but is there anything I'm missing with the above plan?
