Lunch Allowance - Truck Drivers
Discussion
Hi all,
I've had a couple of drivers leave me for other companies - particularly hauliers. As part of their package they are being offered a "lunch allowance" of circa £15 per day.
What does the employer need to do to satisfy the requirements of this? I was thinking of offering something similar, as it would provide my employees with a greater incentive to stay within the business. What would my tax position be? Any impact on NI or anything else?

My recommendation would be to talk to HMRC. There is specific legislation regarding being able to give mobile employees a fixed sum per meal, without incurring any tax or NI liability.
In some cases you can get a special dispensation to allow you to pay something other than the norm if you have circumstances that allow it. For instance, our guys all get £25 per day when they are out of the country.
While this sum is the total of all the specific daily meals you can have, we were allowed to lump It into one payment and not have supporting receipts.
