Appear to have the worn starter motor / sticking solonoid problem. Have diagnosed this by reading the appropriate threads. Car will only start warm if tapped with hammer/crowbar. Turning the key produces no noise bar the fuel pumps, had the alarm checked by a specialist today - all OK.

Is the solonoid part of the starter motor? Should I replace it with a new unit, or is a reconditioned one just as good?

Any reason why I shouldn't take it down the local Land Rover dealer or AA Centre for a replacement?

Your answers greatly appreciated...

I think its up to u what u want to pay.
Recon one upto £150 tops (should be as good as new)
New ones i think are around £300 from dealers(i stand corrected I.A)

I was lucky enough to get an unused 2nd hand one from an unstarted project for £75 and can quote you the Land rover part No.(as this was the same on both mine) if you want to try a rover dealer.

The solenoid and starter are all in the same casing and i beleieve there might be some differences through the years in the fixing positions so it might be worth taking youre old one with you if you r going to get a new one.

I had also spoke to joolz about re-conditioning my old one which he would of been happy to do if i coulndnt find a company nearby to me to do it(before i found the new one).
Look in yellow pages theres plenty of companys who will re-con them out there.

julianhl, i seem to have the same problem. tried to start the car, alarm went mental. tried all earthing/battery checks but could not start it. alarm specialist came out and car started first time before he got near it - still had to pay the callout charge! he suggested solonoid on the starter motor is on the way out. does anyone know if it is possible to repair/repace/exchange this or does the whole starter motor need replacing. i have had no problems since, but i am a bit apprehensive.
