E46 inspection 2
Discussion
They'll be replacing shims, not collets.
Collets keep the valve under the spring pressure. Shims dictate the valve clearance, or what is known as lash. This lash increases with wear hence the need for checking and adjustment if necessary.
Sometimes you won't need any. Other times maybe 3 or 4. They're only a few quid each if I remember rightly.

Why? Get a decent Indy you trust. Or do it yourself. A dealer Insp 2 on a 320d is: change the oil and filters, check the car. An hour max.
I've got the E61 M5 and E30 M3 in for a service and I've done well for a discount so adding the E46 in for a service is cost effective for more discount. HJG said:

ah, i wasn't sure i had the right thing. i had visions of loads of tiny bits of metal exploding into a million pieces and costing me a fortune. im going to go and read up on Lash now.Collets keep the valve under the spring pressure. the car is at a specialist - i didnt want to pay the £925 + VAT that my local BMW dealer wanted.

Car has gone in for its Inspection 2 today. Having the Alva clearances checked in the morning.
How many collets have you lot had to replace?
I'm expecting a financial bumming tomorrow.
Shims you mean? Valve clearances must be checked and adjusted during both Inspection 1 and 2 services, not just 2.How many collets have you lot had to replace?

I've just picked my car up today from having the Inspection 2 done. No clearances needed this time round but during the Inspection 1, needed some adjustment with shim sizes that needed to be ordered due to no stock at the indy.
Only downside is that Inspections are always a 2 day job as the car has to be kept overnight on-site so it's stone cold.
Anyway, mine came to £1070 from an indy. I also had the flex disc replaced as that had some cracks, so that price included the part and labour.
I actually forgot to supply the oils this time round due to being mega busy, else I'd have saved quite a bit. Next time...
Whilst my car's had failed sensors that needed changing over the years, the engine itself has never let me down. It hasn't even needed a coolant or oil topup in 40,000 miles of ownership!
Vpower only and some mechanical sympathy, especially keeping the oil temp in mind before going over 4krpmn on cold starts has probably helped.

yep - shims. shows how much i know.
looking through the paperwork - there were no adjustments needed, im not sure if thats something to do with the HG being changed 3000 miles ago (i think they were done then too)
im lucky in the respect that usually do less than 3k per year so as much as i check the oil, it rarely needs it. total bill was £930 in power steering flush and fluid, some wipers, new sleeve for the hydraulic tensioner and a couple of other little bits.
