Gastroscopy with no general or sedation

Anyone had one of these with no general or sedation? How did it go?
I wanted to avoid any drugs and the gastrologue was quite happy to go along with it. I regularly have an ENT checking my vocal chords with a camera and that's no bother at all so figured it would be fine.
Any advice from any sword swallowers?

Think I've had one - endoscope down the throat into the stomach?
Had the throat spray, which the nurse was pretty useless at spraying the target area - the doctor took charge and he was much better at it.
No problems, I had a guard in my mouth , which helps to guide the endoscope down without hitting the sides.
Throat was frozen, via the spray, for about 20 mins in total.

I recently had a camera up & down, the down one was over quicker but was the worse from the 2, i didn't have no sedation etc. I said if i had it done again i would get sedated, its just the stomach wrenchin balkin that go me but soon over with so i suppose if you want to suffer for a bit to save the sedation etc
Throat spray didn't have no effect i didn't feel, I had Biopsies took so maybe that made mine worse

I had the camera and little grab thingy down to take a sample of intestine lining for diagnosis of Coeliac Disease.
I'm one of the worst patients when it comes to medical matters - even my GP has a note on my records 'nervous patient'.
I had sedation before the endoscopy and the spray in the throat. I hardly felt a thing - as the actress said to the Bishop and even watched the procedure on the screen. Only discomfort was a bit of a sore dry throat afterwards for a few hours. I would recommend sedation, but no need for a general anaesthetic

I have. It wasn't overly pleasant, but nothing horrendous. As I said in a previous thread, I wouldn't bother with sedation if I had another.https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...
I had one a few weeks ago and they went in via my nose. (I was suprised how thick the cable was)
One spray in the throat and another in a nostril and after a quick swallow the doctor had full on HD vision of my empty stomach
I was apprehensive beforehand, but that soon subsided, it felt a bit weird when the doc. pumped a little air in, but otherwise nothing to worry about. I didn't even feel the biopsy.

I had one - or the start of one - accidentally; they failed to take into account relevant information and initially underdosed me BADLY with the sedative.
As an unexpected experience to which I hadn't consented, it was the utter utter pits, it's something I still have the occasional nightmare about.
I think if I'd gone in knowing, had been able to have a conversation with them about it, it would've been fine. Not that it's something I'd choose, but hey.

Had mine done in 2012,must admit I had the throat spray.
The young lady doing it showed me the camera on a stick thingy and it looked very small,felt a lot bigger as it was fed down my throat.
Not the nicest experience but seeing as I had had a burst ulcer and a near death experience 2 months before I just dealt with it.
Must say I now have a lot of respect for the ladies in those "art" films who can get much bigger items down their throats though.

I had a bronchoscopy (camera/ultrasound/biopsy needle into my lungs), despite the sedation I still remember most of it and it was pretty horrific. The urge to cough was very bad but I knew this would be a bad thing to do with a pile of stuff shoved down my throat + them messing around with a needle. If I ever had to do it again (or any other endoscopy) I'd be asking for the biggest dose of chill out drugs they could possibly give me.

I've had one endoscopy which I had without sedation. The big plus is you get off the bed after the procedure, have a cup of tea and go home. There's no recovery from the sedation. The big minus is that it's not very pleasant. There were a lot of nurses in the room when I had mine, all of which had their hands on me in case I decided to get up whilst the camera was firking about in my duodenum.
Without sedation its not nice (a lot of retching! feeling like you can't breath properly) but it's not really painful. If I needed to do it again I wouldn't have sedation.

I was told that the diameter of the fibrescope is about 10mm which seems very fair.
I'm very intrigued to know how it will go and very interested to see what it all looks like on the screen.

I had it with no spray or sedation - there was a lot of retching (far more than I expected), and a lot of drooling. Not pleasant, and I would 100% take the sedation if I had to have another! I had one without sedation, just a spray. Not a pleasant experience but not the worst thing in the world. In fact, the worst thing of the whole experience was the nurses looking at my sympathetically and saying (in a patronising tone) "don't worry, no need to cry, it's all over now". Cheeky buggers lol.

I had the camera up check, with small biopsy grabs on a few pollips, only mild sedation given. I was watching the exam on the monitor whilst the speciallist expalined it. I think without any sedative it would have been uncomfortable.
I felt OK to drive home after, but was told not to, so my wife had to get the bus into the City to collect me and drive me home in my car!

I had a similar process, with a mild local sedative (I have had it done twice, and first time I was right out) and it was still quite painful.I felt OK to drive home after, but was told not to, so my wife had to get the bus into the City to collect me and drive me home in my car!
I was told to sit around for an hour or so afterwards and I would be OK to drive- but I wasn't. Moral is - don't drive to the appointment, even if theoretically OK to drive back (unless of course no sedative at all). Leaving a car overnight in most hospital car parks nowadays is expensive!

The difference between a flexi nose-a-scope and a gastroscope is huge. The ENT version is nice and delicate and only really goes up your nose to peer round the corner at your cords from above.
