Mysterious DPF issue

For the past 4-5mths on the Q7 the engine management light has been illuminated and on scanning it showed the DPF - I suspect a faulty sensor somewhere but subsequently meant no-regeneration
I have been debating for a a couple of months whether to get the DPF removed and coded out - spoke to my local garage who do all our work who said they wouldnt do it, but recommended someone who would and advised they wouldnt know if it was gone or not come MOT time.
However, I parked up at the train station in quite an exposed position and the car was left for a few days - on returning the light has now gone out - its been over a week and its still out - In order to try and keep it out I have been using Sport mode alone to keep the revs high and exhaust temp up - no idea if this is helping or not
Any ideas on what may have caused this self-healing, as it seems quite strange!?
