I wonder if the important difference is that you are not allowed to modify you exhaust to make it louder (punching holes in it, attaching a duck lure to the tailpipe etc), but you can fit an aftermarket exhaust which makes the car louded.

Oh really?

Dammit.

Sorry chaps. My screw up (hadn't considered login issues).

In a nutshell;

The exhaust is an aftermarket stainless steel item that is in good condition and is road legal. The car has a MOT with that system attached.

I can think of a number of circumstances under which whatever laws caused the production of this form would be excessivly punative.

What happens if you built your own car, or, you made your own exhaust for a production car?

At the end of the day, it's only a bit of pipe. A law against an excessively loud vehicle makes a degree of sense. A law against and aftermarket exhaust is just nuts.

Edited to add:

And I bet they take away the right to repair your own vehicle next. When they do, I won't have to care that my exhaust is just about to fall off.....

Is that for real? I've never heard (no pun intended) of such a law that doesn't allow after market exhausts! Good God, if this is true there must be 10,000s of cars with such systems.

And as mentioned above, what about kit cars etc? Mine is very noisy, sets of car alarms etc. but passed it's SVA, where it was subjected to a noise test, so it's totally road legal. Sounds to me like another lentalist getting his/her way

I know of no such law unless the noise exceeds a certain dB level. I suspect that this is a fake, sent by an interfering neighbor: the kind that puts fake gatsos up.

Looks fake to me! Can a Bib comment? Mine is loud, but its a manufacturers fitted exhaust and its recommended for the car I have, where does that leave us TVR owners!

Got it in one. If this chap was pulled over and the exhaust was obviously an unmodified aftermarket part there would be no problem.

Gentlemen. Thank's for your time looking at this.

It has been brought to my attention that this is almost certainly a wind up.

The utter, utter bastard.

I'm off to change my underpants now.

Was it a) some one you know or b) someone who hates your car noise but thought they would give it a shot?

There is a legal maximum decibel limit laid down under C & U regulations. If in doubt you can find an MSA Official Scrutineer who can use a calibrated decibel meter to test it. I can't remember the actual legal limit, but for road-rally cars it's something like 98 decibels at 5000 rpm at 45 degress and 0.5m from the end of the exhaust pipe.
However, I think the legislation is to be changed to a 'drive-by' test as this can then include induction noise.
Does a noisy aftermarket exhaust really give more power? If not, why fit one and risk the aggro?

It was a guy who sold the car to a mate, then decided to have a little fun with him.....

With a turbo, the best exhaust is no exhaust. Hot side of the turbo provides all the backpressure an engine could want and then some.

Actually Stage Rally 100dB @ 4500 rev/min @ 0.5m 45 deg to the/each outlet, 0.5m above ground. For Road Rallies 98dB applies at 0.66 x max speed of engine.

The SVA regs before the EC Directive 92/97/EEC came in around 2003 required 101dB at 3/4 x max spped of engine.

I understand that a police office can deem that a car is emitting excessive noise but demonstration of compliance with SVA standard should be a reasonable defence.

The Sporting authorities seem overly quick to impose excessive restrictions on competitors in this and other cases.

Was it posted 1st April by any chance? You've given me an idea as my bro's MR2 has a rather large Blitz exhaust

Probably the same spec Blitz as on mine.

If I can get the template, I'll host it and post a link...

Errr. Right.

I've just heard from the guy and said "har har, good one bossman"

And then he told me he's just got off the phone with the police.

It's genuine. He's on the phone to the papers right now.

Good job I don't live anywhere near you then, as friends tell me they can hear me from 1/4 mile away.

Mmmmm..micron exhaust, v-twin motorcycle.....

On a more serious note, I totally believe that I would not have nerve damage in my right arm if I had had those cans fitted when I bought the bike. The fecker would, most likely, have heard me coming and wouldn't have allowed their idiot spawn to hit me with the car door in the first place.

Interestingly, the current cans do bear a BS No. Wonder how many BiB would know the correct regs if they really were bloody-minded enough to want to charge me with anything?

LOUD CANS SAVE LIVES.
eh? did someone say something?

On a more general policing note, my local force appears to have resisted the allure of the cameras and traffic are as thick on the ground as ever.

I have had the (mis?)fortune of meeting a fair number of trafpol in the course of my employment and for the most part they are a great bunch. Fair minded and up for a laugh, like most of the PH massive, I would dare to venture, as long as you don't take the p*ss and make it impossible for them to do their jobs.

For the most part, IMO, loud exhausts are in the ear of the beholder. How much louder am I at 5,000rpm than my riding partner who is pushing 8-9000rpm to maintain the same speed?

Keep us posted on this one, as I can't honestly believe he's getting busted because some lentalist had a moan to the police about the noise his car's making.

It still looks like a wind-up. The grammer is poor and the registration is hand-written while the place is typed - not consistent.
