Volvo V70 Stalling when setting off in German winter
Discussion
Hello,
Looking for a few quick pointers of what could be the issue.
2004 Volvo V70 2.4 Diesel on 205,000miles
Recently brought it over to Munich, Germany from the UK to use for the next couple of months here. I've noticed on the much colder mornings I'm having issues were the car will stall when setting off from traffic lights and the like. Just when starting to apply throttle it will start to splutter and feel as if it is about to stall and by the time the clutch has came up slightly it will die. I've been quick enough to switch the car off and back on again when I feel this starting to happen as the lights are changing but mostly it catches me off gaurd. It doesn't play well with the very impatient German drivers on their morning commute to have a UK car stopped for all of 5 seconds at a set of lights!
I've not had any issues with the car over the past 3-4 months and 10,000 miles of ownership, driving between the UK and different parts of Europe but so I'm assuming its the colder weather thats causing the problem.
Could I be right in thinking its an issue with the glow plugs? Or maybe a fuel issue?
Cheers.
Any pointers or things I could check first myself (limited tools unfortunately) before taking it to a local garage where I feel I might be taken advantage of with not being able to speak the language and bringing a foreign car to them.

Another point to add that I missed before.
During the first 10minutes or so of running, whilst on idle it has a kind of knock from the engine. Although disappears once revs are increased slightly and not heard whilst driving. It almost sounds like something is loose, I'd say a heatsheild but it's more of a continuous knock than a rattle.
Again this noise, along with the stalling issue, do not appear once the engine has been running for 15mins+ (ie. When warm)
I'm not saying these faults are linked but because they both disappear when warm I feel they might be.

Does it still start ok, or does it need a couple of cranks before firing? If It does it could be partially blocked fuel filter and with cold waxy diesel it’s causing fuel starvation .
If it starts alright, what’s the revs sitting at at idle? Try sticking on the ac to raise the idle slightly and see if I still cuts out

Starts just fine, well the same as it always has. It maybe is a little longer to start than a normal car (by an absolute split second) but it could possibly be something to look at. Ticks over okay on idle, I haven't noticed it die whilst idling, only when starting to apply throttle (fuel mixture maybe off?).
I've not noticed if it has a higher idle when cold but I'll check that. I'll also try if the a/c makes a difference as it's usually switched off at this time of year.
Could be injector issues usually noticeable with misfire or smokey exhaust. Another fault could be with the variable cam timing pulley or actuator which sound like a ticking or knock noise from top of cylinder 1 area. Cam timing is adjusted during cold running for better emissions.Oil pressure is used to adjust the cam timing pulley via electronic actuator. The cam pulleys were the main culprit. Have you changed the engine oil recently ? The oil could be dirty and contaminated or incorrect oil viscosity for temperature . Best get it to a Volvo dealer or specialist
