Why not just use your phone like everyone else? Apple are slowly killing iPods for this reason but if you are quick you can get an iPod shuffle for about £50.

Rip all your music to FLAC or ALAC then you can convert it to any other format you like.

Not Apple / Beats, Logitech or even (as you say) Bose. Unless the listener absolutely needs active cancellation. After that, I can only say actually try them. Peoples' ears differ in shape quite a lot, as does their sound perception.
It sounds like you might benefit from an external portable headphone amplifier if you need the drive level. Very few mobile devices are capable of driving headphones well (not necessarily loudly) and inevitably lose detail and gain noise in the process.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but I'm in a similar position too ... I usually listen to YouTube and Soundcloud on my phone, but ideally, I'd like to have a music collection available to me offline. I'm currently looking at the;

The X3iii looks to be smaller, thinner and marginally better in terms of specifications when compared to the X3. However it seems strange that the X3 is still available to purchase and marketed on their website. Surely the X3iii would supersede it, unless I'm missing something? Alternatively, I guess I could upgrade to an iPhone 6/6S with decent internal storage and use that instead ...
