Purely hypothetical, but say I have a ten grand budget and want a large petrol automatic with reasonable mileage (about 6 years old and under 70k on clock), needs to match a 5 series for space, and cost no more than 305 a year road tax.

Where would you be looking?

Ive seen a lexus is250 f sport, 2011 auto, ten grand with 37k on clock... Bit small tho, especially back seats.

Probably rule out VAG cars.

What's the ford power shift gearbox like?

Nice motor, but that is VERY strong money for a 2001 A8.

Plus, I think the OP wants something a bit newer.

How about something like this?

Great car. Surely it's 500 a year road tax, and 5mpg tho lol.

If it’s pre March 2001, then road tax would be 235. We used to have one of these. Mpg isn’t hideous - think around 20. It’s strong money but the number of these that come up a year in this sort of condition you can count on your thumbs.

And they are amazingly well built.

Only 4 seats, but you could get a CLS350 for bang on your budget:

Otherwise, I'd look have a look at a Mazda 6:

I looked at Mazda 6 about 6 months ago. Petrol version felt a bit underpowered, and interior quality wasn't brilliant. Otherwise nice cars. Huge

Would be interested in answers to a similar question but with a slant on avent/estate cars.

You aren't wrong, they seem very rare with asking prices to suit. I think there is one on AT at the moment for £10k!
