In the papers today I read an article that states various crimes are to be issued with different points.HOW ABOUT THIS THEN. for a motorist caught without a seatbelt on the officer gets 5 points. For someone caught shoplifting the officer only gets 2 points, with a target of 200 points per month ( Thames Valley Region ) It shows which criminals the local police consider to be worth catching.

Errm this only applies to trafpol.

You will find that the points only apply to people whom are wanted for offences and are stopped proactivly.

Such as a driver or passenger whom are wanted for shoplifting, burglary etc. Not for attending the scene and nicking a detained shoplifter.

I read it was 5pts for somebody not wearing a seatbelt and 10pts for catching a rapist! Bearing in mind that speeding is probably considered worse than failing to buckle up - I wonder how it compares to rape?

From The Times IIRC?

The policy and points card doesn't say that.
Journalistic licence applied by Times reporter!

Rape is not something a single officer can deal with. However only 1 person can claim the detection for a rape! Normally there are up to a dozen officers investigating something like a rape and many hours of interviews and other investigative procedures follow. Only 1 officer needs to deal with a seat belt in about 5 minutes

I thought the 'detection' system was enough of a point scoring system in itself. Does nothing to reflect the work of the police service in this country but all the statistical emphasis seems to be on getting more of them.

Trafpol need some kind of rating system since DIC or dangerous driving aren't actually 'detected' as crimes. Complete pile of **** in my opinion... maybe I can change things when I become chief constable.
