I'm sat here 3 weeks on from rolling over my ankle, going a little stir crazy, planning my return to normal life.

I'm still awaiting a scan to confirm, but the doctor has suspected one, possibly two torn ligaments and a torn muscle. ATFL and peroneus muscle.

I play a little rugby, and work as a warehouse manager, albeit a hands-on one.

Is there a brace available that I could wear for work and sports use?

There are so many available I just don't know what to choose.

Thanks!

It depends on the damage done.

A visit to a physio would make sense as they will choose between either limiting to joints moment with an adjustable brace or allowing movement but with support depending on the damage done. A GP will not have a clue.

Thank you

See what the scan comes back with then.

I was supposed to be starting physio this week. However, the doc changed his mind, and decided to put it off until after the scan. I think he has concerns over the muscle damage.

As you are a sportsman and considering the ligament (?) damage I would just book a private physio session as a one off to start with (whilst you are waiting) and see what they say. Poor healing of any ligament damage (from waiting) could cause more long tern problems than muscular.

I've used these for football for the last 6 years and can't recommend them enough. I tried a lot of the other lycra and straps ones but they weren't tight enough to stop me going over on one or the other of my dodgy ankles so every other match I was getting injured.Tie them up as tight as is comfortable and your ankle doesn't move.

I strained a tendon 6 months ago and its not really any better. I now use one of these (well a similar one) and it definitely helps support it.

6 months!!

Elk - sportsman may be pushing it a touch. biglaugh

It turns out my wife's cousin is a private physio. Time for family visiting!

I like the look of those braces, if they are suitable. Do you think they would fit under a safety boot?

Once a scan has confirmed the nature of the injury (if it does), then gradually putting weight back on the foot as soon as is viable is recommended. Lightweight high repetition exercises to increase blood flow and build up strength and joint/muscle/ligament flexibility exercises to aid recovery are suggested. Depending on the severity of the muscle tear/strain 6 months is possibly a bit optimistic.

Air cast A60. I have an extremely weak ankle, the result of spraining it and not getting proper physiology afterwards. This cast will stabilise your ankle. I continued to do Tae Kwon Do and never had any problems while wearing the cast. Thin enough to fit into a trainer (for running). Andy Murray wears won.

Scan complete. Not as bad as initially feared.

My ATFL is torn almost all the way through. Others are 'thickened', possibly not the correct word. Can't remember what he said.

I would hope you have been or will be fitted with a movement limiting support initially and with that backed up by Physio/treatment.

Grade 2 damage can cause long term weakness......

I have had a moon boot on since the injury. (25 days ago).

Physio is yet to be arranged.

Is your moon boot anything like mine??

I snapped my Achilles a week ago, a complete rupture with 8 weeks in this thing..... I can walk in it without crutches though, can’t even put my foot to the ground without it.

Snapped Achilles! Ouch.

This is what I have. I can walk about in it, though it was difficult at first. I couldn't bear any weight on the foot for the first few days without it.

Walking is fairly easy now, though painful if I go too far so I use crutches if out and about.

Top tip. Don't get over confident after a week or so, and think you can hobble to the loo in the middle of the night without the boot!

Should I be well down that road by now? In an ideal world.

Ouch indeed, I have to wear my boot in bed so not chance of walking to the loo at night without it!

At least it looks like your getting some air to your toes with your setup, mine is making my foot sweat which is creating an entirely separate issue!!

Yeah I've had some unpleasant side effects of the boot! It's pretty grim!

Can't imagine wearing it in bed. Though it would keep your foot warm! I couldn't bear the quilt on my foot so it was stuck out like an icicle!

The one they put me in (after a water ski accident) had a pair of hinges and the physio set the limit of movement, increasing it weekly.

I get the feeling I should have gone to a better doctor!
