Recently my daughter proudly told me she won the “awesome cap of awesomeness” which is some kind of achievement award in her junior school. From what I can gather it’s a gold cap that you can wear in class but aparently not in assembly or in the playground. Perhaps it’s valuable or something, hehe

In my school we had all kinds of random awards. There was a magnificent sword that you got your name engraved on for being the best at tackling in rugby, there was an old cricket bat that again your name went on for batting in cricket. I think old pupils donated these things so that they could have an award named after them. There was all manner of fantastic objects with metal plates and names engraved on them. Obviously winners didn’t get to take home the sword but it was cool to see it up there with your name on it.

I myself didn’t win much but unusually won an academic award in sixth form which was oddly simply some money. I think it was designed so that I could buy some books but I took my friends to the pub and I vaguely remember we had enough to buy a round. It was fantastic thinking A) I’d won something and B) the school was paying for our cider.

What school awards did fellow piston headers win in their youth?

I didn't think you were allowed to win anything at school any more for fear of upsetting those that didn't win.

Never got anything for it.

You should donate some gold running spikes to your school and create ‘The Zoon award for cross country’ get someone to make a big glass box for them.

Immortalising yourself and encouraging other minority sportsmen. hehe

Ahhh yes I remember. It was writing in pencil until the teacher was convinced of your capability in joined up hand writing and ability to not make frequent mistakes. Then they'd reach into the stationary draw and bestow you with the red Berol pen (with bright blue ink).

Then it was onto the next item of the day.... Tipex!

Never won owt at school. If you weren't into football, it never counted. I could kick ass at the high jump and I won plenty of stuff in the pool when I was younger. But if it weren't footy, it didn't matter.

I was good at running. The prize was not getting beaten up for being st at all the team sports as the potential beater-uppers couldn't catch me!

I won the CCF Award in 2001 for being the best cadet in the school, apparently. As with everything, the prize for this was some book tokens to go and spend at the book shop near the school, the book was then presented to you by the Headmaster at the annual Prize Giving ceremon.

I was quite proud of that.

At the start of secondary school I was the cleverest kid in my class (trust me, in West Dorset c. 1984 that was not saying much).

At the end of the first year I got something like the "academic achievement award".

At the end of the second year I was still the cleverest, but someone else got the certificate.

When I queried this I was told "we can't keep giving it to the same pupil every year".

That probably taught me more than all the other st that school told me put together.

I got entered in the inter-house cross-country at sports day one year.

I came 63rd - there were four houses, with 15 entrants from each.

I wasn't even last.

I won two.

The first was the Physics prize, I won as I was the only one in my year to pass GCSE physics (private school where 60% of the kids were thick as mince but it didn't matter as they would be going into Daddy's business)

The second was a large wooden spoon engraved with my name issued by the PE/Woodwork teacher for the most frequent and imaginative excuses for getting out of PE.

Thursday afternoons were designated for PE, and the mere thought of chasing a pigs bladder in the rain, snow and mud made the alternative of staying in the art room with the "gayers, salad dodgers and wheezing asthmatics" so much more attractive, helped that the art teacher was a hottie.

Ah, yes... One of the advantages of the 6th form was that we could do a sporting activity outside school, if it wasn't offered inside. I liked swimming. The school didn't have a pool. Job jobbed.

One day, the head of year called me into his office, and asked how the swimming was going. Oh, fine, Sir. And which pool did I go to? And how was I coping with the minor detail it'd been closed for refurbishment for the last nine months?

Busted.

I won the school chess prize, winning the final against the headmaster. Quite why the headmaster entered the tournament and watched a bunch of kids lose to him is still beyond me.

Thug life.

Some academic and sports stuff too.

Got set homework to write about how our town would be in 20 years time or something, which our English teacher was going to submit into the town contest. I didnt think we should be doing it, was nothing to do with our GCSEs so as a protest just wrote the most ridiculous ideas I could imagine, and only went and won.

Prize was behind the scenes tour of Gatwick Airport, which was actually really good. Highlights being taken out in the Fire Engine hooning up the runways, pissing off planes who complained we were too close and then getting to spray all the water cannons on their training aircraft.

So 4 houses x 15= 60, yet you came 63rd and weren't even lastconfused I'm guessing you didn't win any maths prizes either, or am I due a parrot?
