Hi all.

My daughter and I generally get a new game roughly each month to play in the evenings. We've recently enjoyed 'Uncharted', 'Doom 2016', 'Journey' and 'Dishonoured' to name a few. Since shes still currently hooked on Halloween stuff, her choice is a scary game.

I've watched some of the YouTube top ten lists, and they are providing some decent ideas. I'm looking for some first hand experience at what games (If any) have truly terrified you.

Ideally it'll be more than just jump scares, a really spooky atmosphere is what we're after (I'm still spooked by my childhood memories of Silent Hill!), with some elements that go outside the box. Gore isn't an issue, although I'd rather avoid gratuitous violence against humans, such as that seen in Manhunt. Complexity and difficulty isn't a problem, as I do most of the playing, although she was able to play through the games mentioned above easily enough.

Since its for PS4, it'll probably need to be something from the last 15 years.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions biggrin

Have you played "The Last of Us"?

If not, do. Not scary jumpy but very eerie and such a great story line. I'm sure you'd both love it.

Outlast and Outlast 2. I've not played 2 yet but it has great reviews too.

Ah yes, I should have mentioned that. We got the remastered version for PS4 and played it last year. One of the best games I've ever played, and my daughter loved it.

It was good enough, that the sole reason we immediately went out and bought all four Uncharted games, was because of its solid game design and trust in the developer. We were not disappointed.

That's another one that kept cropping up on the YouTube lists. Looks like you have to use the video camera a lot in the dark areas, which seems pretty cool. I think I'm going to buy a few this time to keep us occupied, these will likely make the list.

Another one she's interested in, is Amnesia, the dark descent, because on a video it showed 'invisible monsters!' Anyone played this?

My daughter is 7, but rather mature for one so small. Mature enough that she doesn't go psycho, and isn't kept awake at night hehe

Amnesia: The Dark Descent. It's properly scary at times, it's nothing like these so called horror games where you're armed to the teeth.

I played it on PC, but I'm pretty sure it's available on PS4.

A similar feeling game (though thematically very different), is Alien: Isolation. It conjures the same feeling of helplessness.

Resident Evil 7 and a VR headset.
I don't think there is anything as scary on the market.

It will probably look like old hat in graphical terms but I remember Project Zero II: Crimson Butterfly being super spooky from start to finish, it was absolutely superb.

Forbidden Siren and Forbidden Siren 2 were both epically scary too. There's nothing on the market that lives up to the Japanese horror games of that era.

How old is your daughter? Until Dawn is very good but language/content is teen-orientated so if she's quite young it might not be appropriate.

Evil Dead is also supposed to be good but can't really comment on it; scary/horror games aren't really my thing.

ETA just saw the post where you said she's 7. Check out some lets plays of Until Dawn to see if you think it's suitable; I'd recommend Geek Remix's let's play if you want to take a look.

The HD remake of the original Resident Evil is definitely one of the creepiest games in the series

ah yeh, I was going to say Outlast won't be suitable if young.... theres even a bit in it I thought was a bit graphic! (not gore or anything... just... graphic!)

theres a bit in whistleblower where there a zombie err... pleasuring himself over a dead body ... with appropriate sounds too..

Layers of Fear. Extrememly atmospheric, plays with your mind, cheap to buy, bonus is little to no gore, so mostly child friendly, apart from scaring the cr*p out of me. Lol.

Highly HIGHLY recommended.

You won't know fear until you play a scary game on a proper VR headset. I never realised I was such a scaredy cat until I got my Oculus Rift.

This.

Alien Isolation had me screaming like a big jessie and even the hack for Doom 3 is ring-looseningly scary.

Pity the OP has a PS4, as it can't do VR properly like the PC can.

Thanks for all the info! Great stuff!

We've bought Amnesia, and will likely look at Alien isolation after that.

I'll likely look into some of the older games too. Graphics are largely irrelevant to me (unless hopeless due to laziness), as I was brought up playing Doom, Quake and resident evil.

I've got a decent PC as well, i prefer them to consoles, but i have a PS4 purely so I can play stuff with my kid and my friends in the sitting room. My PC has no problem running the games using the id tech 5 engine at max, and should run the current stuff really well too. I just haven't bought anything for the PC in a while. Last thing i got was Shadow of Mordor, which ran nicely.

So talk to me, this VR stuff has got good now then? I've not paid it much attention, but the thought of running Alien isolation on VR sounds awesome! Any kit recommendations?

Thanks again for all the posts.
