The altnerative is of course PM Howard with massive cuts in Public Services followed by a recession with rising crime, unemployment ect

Indeed.
My brother broached this subject with the benefits agency ( I think it was, or some such other organisation) as he and his wife are hard a hardworking family with small child, my S-I-L works full time too and has to pay to put my niece in care during the day, they are not entitled to any benefits, they were told that they earn too much to be entitled to anything, he asked them what they would have to do to be entitled to anything and they said it was for families that work part-time, only one partner working or those that are on are on minimum wage.....
...so, not that hard-working then
Other than wanting to work for sanities sake where is the motivation for people to go to work in the first place if the benefits they do get come to as much as if they were working?
We dont get a penny from the government for anything, no tax credits, child credits. We do get child benefit but thats it.
Now this is fine with me, I'm happy with that, dont see why the state should sponser my life choices.
However as I work and am above the threshold and 'er indoors works but doesnt earn (startup) we had a look what would happen if I engineered redudancy and worked for the business but didnt take an income.
A startingly £8K annual handout for starters.
Its utter utter utter madness.
Benefits; If not everyone can have them, no one should get them.

I am afraid that this is the crux of the problem. None of the parties are actually addressing the problems that are faced by the nation as a whole. Rising house prices force more and more to work and hence pushes parents to use full-time or part-time child care.
Its actually amazing the costs of child care and can often take a hard working family of combined income of £50k+ to the limit.... hence reliance on credit and large mortgages. The "wealth creation" is just an illusion as we all earn more but have to spend more....
Like I said, none of the political parties are addressing this issue, meaning we all work harder for others to benefit (minimum wage, tax credits and other hand-outs). I have even had the discussion with my wife about whether she should work or not.... its bizzare as she can and does make good money, but its hard to make the numbers work when a tighter budget on weekly shopping can make the difference on whether it is worth it to work or not.....

The vast majority of the wealth created by Labour has been inflation. House price inflation to be precise. The creation of new assets does not come into it. In fact infrastructure spending on, say, roads has been cut to the bone.
The way they spin they make a turd look good. If the population halved they would say how good it is and if the population doubled they would do the same. The fact is that the reason for the huge tax increases is that labour could not manage the proverbial piss up in a brewery. They have doubled the £ spend on the health service yet output is up by less than 10%. What do you expect from the gang of social workers, teachers, lawyers and opportunistic career politicians that make up the labour party?

Childcare credits? This isnt tax credits is it? Currently investigating the option of a nanny at the moment, but poaching from the nursery is a little hard and potentially unethical. But, since they take 20-something fully trained nursery nurses and pay them the minimum wage, make them work bank holidays and dont pay them for holidays, it should be fairly easy.....

A nanny bought in from the open market will be far more skilled, generally speaking.
