We all know this one, and it drives many potty. A thread starts off asking for advice on what compressor to buy, and 13 pages in ends up with posters squabbling about Brexit. Or threads get littered with posts starting 'snowflake' and ending HTH.

The majority come on here looking to be amicable, have friendly debate and compare 'notes'. A small percentage evidently don't, and the remaining majority have to stomach their bile and crap.

I don't believe banning is the answer. Unless you ban an IP address they come back with a new handle, or take a month out then business as usual.

I had a thought. Why not allow a little self moderation? Allow any post to be down-voted. Now of course, any post however apt risks someone cynically down-voting it, but set a threshold, EG 100 people down-vote a post and action is taken. At this point the post either goes in to faint text, or even disappears?

Is this viable from a tech point? It would be great for the majority, knowing which posts to simply skip past.

I believe these people crave an audience. Take it away from them.
