.... on the way down to the south west, not during the 24 hour race period.

Worth doing? Is it a nice area? Much going on throughout the year?

A few miles south of LeMans city is the loire valley. Loads of touristy things here, we stop over in this area when driving from Calais to the southern Vendee region just north of La Rochelle. Google for Loire Valley I found loads of sites. The whole area is flooded with beautiful chateau so it would be rude not to stay in one. Tis not that expensive.

Le Mans city itself is quite nice, loads of shops and boutiques for the good lady and if you are interested mediaeval architecture and abbey are quite good.

Motor museum at the race circuit is worth a look and there are some good exhibits to be seen

Good luck mate

The Old Town area is fairly picturesque but no more so than any number of other French towns. The 24hrs Museum is interesting but is fairly small.

If you're in the area then it's worth a stop for a leisurely lunch.
